About 5-6 years of work on the part of Microsoft programmers and engineers. Vista is very demanding: it just abourt requires a new computer, with much more RAM, advanced video and audio cards, etc., etc. Vista still has numerous problems, having been on the open market less than one year. The price tag is still MUCH too high.
XP has been around for 4-5 years and is a proven operating system. I've used Microsoft operating systems since the 1980's and XP is the best one so far.

This link provides a simple look at some of the differences most users will see. Things that are less apparent are the User Access Controls (UAC) and the program execution environment. Things not mentioned in the link that will be very apparent to users though are increased system requirements (much higher than XP for decent performance).

if u knew the difference between dos 5.5 and win 3.1 and between win95 and win3.1, you don't need to know any other differences... basically some improvement in gui and nothing else.
