Some Protestants see suffering as God's punishment of sinful people or the world as a whole. Others see such suffering as a way a loving God tests the faith and strength of survivors.

I think it is meant to test the faith of Christians. But those who don't have Christ are suffering, only because they don't have him to help. Suffering kind of does both, tests and punishes.

The Jews are the most hated/persecuted people on the planet...Why though? God (assuming there is one) chose the Jews to serve the role as Messiah/Savior...A living, breathing, long suffering penance for the sins of humanity. As a reward for that service the Jews will supposedly ascend to the Pearlies first to keep the Gates at the "end of days". Protestant suffering? What a crock. PEACE!

Either way, God is evidently cruel.
Why would an all powerful all knowing creator, need to test sinful imperfect beings?
God already knows what your limits are right? So if he is creating suffering as a test, then it is for the benefit of the person doing the suffering right? Dead babies who starved to death, don't learn a lesson....
If it is all about punishment of sin, then God needs to answer for the creation of Lucifer, knowing he would bring sin into the world, and he needs to answer for allowing Eve to be tempted by the father of lies, while she didn't have a knowledge of good and evil.

I think suffering is simply a side effect of free will and a result of original sin.

It means that there are no 'standard' beliefs in all religions. It's different everywhere. things are as you see 'em, life's what you make it.
