Polysporin is an ANTIBACTERIAL and therefore is not helpful for coldsores which are VIRAL. It will be useful only if you have a secondary bacterial infection. Try Zylactin-L or FREQUENT dabbings of hydrogen peroxide.

You can put Polysporin on a cold sore but the benefit you will achieve will be from the lubricating quality of the base. The antibiotic will be of no value. However, the greasy base of the ointment should not be under valued. I think it is much more soothing than peroxide or the the film like pastes that are often used.

I've used Polysporn for my cold sore and it works good. Not as good as Abreva or Cold fx, but it definitely helps control the bacteria and it does not scab. I use Polysporin 3 Antibiotics + pain relief
