As long as you are wearing lenses which allow a high percentage of oxygen to enter your eye you should be ok. There are great lenses available at the moment which all have been designed to be worn longer and in dry environments. If you're not sure whether your lenses are right for you or if you feel they could be more comfortable i would suggest that the best idea is to make an appointment with your local optician and I would recommend you go to an independent rather a large company as independents can often offer lenses that large companies are not offered by certain manufacturers.

I wear my lenses for 12-14 hours a day in an air conditioned environment and I use a computer. As long as you have the best contact lenses for you and have soothing eye drops available just in case, you shouldn't encounter any problems. Contact lenses, when used and worn correctly, should be perfectly safe to wear. However it would be sensible to have one 'non contact lens' day a week and if in doubt, take them out!

Hope this helps! x

I have very poor eyesight and need to wear glasses or contacts. I get the Bausch and Loomb Optima disposable lens. When I wear my contacts, I leave them in for the entire week. I only take them out to rinse them in the morning and in the evening. This helps prevent mineral build up on the lens. I also use a lens lubricant called Renu. This greatly reduces any irritation I may have with the contacts. One of the problems most people have when using a computer is that their blinking rate goes down. Blinking helps to lubricate the eyeball and eyelids, keeping them from drying out. People tend to stare at computer screens. Just remember to blink normally and not stare so much.

Be sure you give your eyes a day or two without the contacts. They will be fine.

Hope this helps.

Shouldn't you be seeking this sort of advice from your optician, rather than a bunch of people on the internet?

Well, never mind, here goes. 16 hours a day is a long period of time. Of course, it all depends on what sort of contact lense you're using. Small lenses can be worn longer and as they don't cover so much of the eyes' surfaces they don't dry them out as much as large, soft lenses. Soft lenses can also vary, some are more "breathable" than others. Perhaps you should give your eyes one extra day without lenses and try to reduce the amount of hours you wear them each day when you can. Whenever your eyes start to itch, take the lenses out.

It depends on the type of lense.

I had the ones you take out at night or when you shower and throw out after two weeks. After a few short years of using them, they told me I wore them for too long (16 hours a day - whenever I was awake). They told me that blood vessels were growing in my eyes to compensate for the lack of oxygen. I was lucky - much longer and those vessels would've started obstructing my vision.

There are plenty of lenses out there that won't starve your eyes for oxygen. Personally, I can't wear them - either they dry too fast, get blurry, are too big and pop out, or I can't see red very well (bad when you're driving), smear, or whatever. That doesn't mean they'll be bad for YOU.

And now that I have glasses again, (which I hate), I CAN see better.

Get samples, try them out until you find something you can use.

contact lenses are generally okay for your eyes..that is if you take them out nightly and clean them regularly..but it wouldnt be a bad idea to get glasses and alternate at times\

i think sitting in front of the computer would damage your eyesight before wearing contacts would..but speak with your optometrist to be certain

it depends on what type of contact lenses you were,
and also, what the optician has advised you on the time limit for each day.if in doubt, contact your optician.
good luck.
