Hi, the simple answer is yes it is possible for folks with some psychoses to get completely better though most folks usually find that it can be controlled with medication. It is, with time, fully possible to lead a "normal" life whatever that may be. I have taken anti-psychotics for nearly 10 years and am just finishing off my degree in human biology though granted it is part time. So, yep it's possible

It depends on what type of psychosis you have: substance-induced? postpartem? affective? schizophrenia-spectrum?

The first three can be temporary. Full remission (i.e., 100% cure) from any of the schizophrenia-spectrum disorders is rare, but anyone can definitely have a reduction in their symptoms and live a good life with the proper treatment and support system. You should ask your psychiatrist to recommend some good books on your specific condition. You may also benefit from participating in some support or discussion groups to help you get over your fear of your illness.

If you have schizophrenia, this memoir might help you come to terms with the illness and what you are going through:

"The Center Cannot Hold: My Journey Through Madness"

It is written by Elyn Saks, who is an associate dean at the University of Southern California law school and also happens to have a very severe course of schizophrenia. It wasn't until her 30s or maybe 40s that she realized she'd never be "cured" and would need to be on medication and talk therapy her entire life. She is very inspiring (to me, at least) and I think she might be approachable enough to receive an email from you asking for some good resources to learn about your condition.

I agree with a lot of the answers - some psychoses like drug or stress-induced psychoses can be completely temporary, but psychosis related to schizophrenia or bipolar disorders often require longer term input and medications.
Regardless of which type you have, your experiences will change you, not necessarily for the worse. Much of the work by Chadwick, or by Garety and Kuipers, or the hearing voices work by Romme & Escher, point to the function of psychosis - often pointing at the experience of other feelings we "split off from". By understanding and developing a model of our mental health we can often come to understand ourselves better.
Of course, this is all very well, but it can also be a terrifying and lonely experience. Get in touch with your local mental health team, ask about local hearing voices or support groups, ask for a referral to a psychology service for sessions around developing a model. And look in the literature for examples of recovery from psychosis - "the recovery model" is a widely acknowledged part of mental health services for people with psychosis.
Remember, it's not the end of the world - Google Rufus May and be encouraged by the fact that his own struggle with psychosis / schizophrenia led him to work in the mental health services, becoming a highly respected clinical psychologist with the power to offer a unique and valuable perspective to people living with schizophrenia, as well as educating his peers.
Good luck!

Maybe not cured but the illness can be controlled. Sometimes it takes a while to find the right meds for you.
Keep trying. Best wishes!

for the most part, psychoses are controlled, and pretty well controlled too, with medications and therapy. There are those that have been cured, but not many.
