Go to Japan and talk only with Japanese. Ofcourse you'll first have to acquire a basic grammar and vocabulary. Take classes for that. Chatting via Internet is also a good method.

Here are some ways to learn a language
1 Be prepared to devote 6 - 8 hours to studying the language you are planning to learn.
2. Regardless of what language it is you can get a video from the library or buy one.
It may include the manual book and dictionary.
3. Have a small booklet of Japanese you can learn from there.
4. If there is someone who is Japanese also you can communicate with that person this is a way of learning.
5. Study hard

Well, immersion is always the fastest way, no substitue for that.
Seeing as how that's impractical in most cases, I'd say use a program like Aurolog and/or some cheaper CD's to listen to in your car. Couple that with a decent language learning book (vocab memorization), and you'll be on your way.
If you live in a larger area, there may be certain free or cheap classes or programs that your city/town does for certain languages. Check out your newspaper.

There are computer programs that teach other languages. I like that over a book because you can hear the pronunciation. Do you know anyone that speaks Japanese? You deffinately need someone to practice with. Is there a class offered at a local college, church, community center? Are you going to Japan? Because sometimes people learn more in the country of the language than in classes. Deffinatley don't wait though. Good luck with that and have fun!

Immerse yourself in the language - stay with a host family in Japan. That would be the fastest way.
If that's not an option, try learning in a class taught by a native of Japan.
When all else fails, go for one of the computer programs, like Rosetta Stone.

Surrounding yourself by people who speaks Japanese. You'll be surprised at how much you pick up when you are forced to hear it all the time. Practice everyday!
