It all depends. Some military bases are good and some are not. And then again it depends on your neighbors and thier kids also. I live on Stewart and we have vandals and robberies and some punk kids. But then you also have MP patrols.

For me, we prefer to live on post. Except for the time we lived in Germany we have always lived on post. We do like it better than living on post. Closer to the PX and things to do on post, Closer for hubby to get back and forth to work. My girls go to an okay school, and they seem to make quicker friends living on post than off post. The kids are all in the same boat as them.

Now some people prefer to live off post for a few reasons also: One, some will get a really cheap place and pocket the rest of the BAH. Two, some soldiers like to get away from the military when they are "off duty". So they prefer to live off base. I know some soldiers that live like 30-40 minutes away from Stewart and some a bit longer and will make that drive everyday. Three, some spouses don't like the military and will try to stay away from it all together so living off post is ideal to them.

But no matter what, you will find some things you don't like about living on and off base.

Here are some websites on Fort Benning. We have never been there but we have been stationed in Georgia at Stewart 2 times:

Hope this helps get you started. And remember any post is what you make of it. If you don't give it some sort of chance, you will hate where you are. Army bases or post are usually in the middle of nowhere and it takes a bit to get to any major city. But a few are in the middle or close to a major city. Fort Stewart is about 20-30 minutes away from Savannah and Fort Drum is about 30-40 minutes away from Syracuse. And Fort Huachuca is about 30 minutes away from Tucson. So it all depends.

Good luck with what ever decision you make and hope you enjoy the military life.

Benning is fantastic, and living in post quarters was so great that My daughter and Son in law basically homesteaded there. And now they still live in Columbus, Ga. where they bought a house just to stay close to Benning (they are no longer in the military though he does work on base.

We even moved there for a few years ourselves after I retired from the Army.

Believe me raising kids on a military base is a lot better than any city I know of.

It is not a good place, it's a wonderful place. It is 99% safer than the civilian community, you are living in a highly monitored/sheltered world. I wish the civilian community lived under the same laws and restrictions as the military community, unfortunately for 99% of the population it is not. My fam. and I lived on base for 20 years and I would not have it any other way. My children were exposed to an extremely diverse community which has helped them be more aware of the social divide that exists in this country. They have friends throughout the United States and that is a blessing in and of itself. There are many benefits to living on base, take advantage of the opportunity an judge for yourself. Like everything else in life, it's all what you make it!
Make the right decision for your treasured family. God Bless!

It's a great thing overall --- lots of children to interact with, relative safety (some posts are more isolated than others and more like their own town), neighbors, facilities and programs on post for youth and children are generally cheaper, etc. We've always enjoyed living on post -- even with the things you dislike!
We were at Fort Benning in 92 so it's been awhile but we really enjoyed the area -- I know they've renovated a lot of the housing since we've been there, and I believe the hospital as well. They had a nice PX, etc. The area is beautiful in the spring with all the azaleas & dogwoods in bloom, there's lots of stuff in Atlanta and the surrounding area to do/see, and even south of there.

I have 2 kids and my oldest absoloutly loves it here. It's so convienent with having the NEX and Commissary here

I'm not sure about Ft. Benning,BUT I do think that living in military housing is way better than living off,it is safer and everyone around you can relate better to you than civilians can.We have thought about movin off base and decided against it because of all the crap that goes on off base
(break ins,drugs,ETC.)

Columbus isn't a bad town. Plenty of outdoors stuff to do around there. If you like football, Auburn is right down the road and game days are always fun there.
