The trappings of religion, the symbols, the ornate, elaborate mask, man had added to a simple philosophy.
I find them a hindrance to the skeletal teachings of the Buddha.
I suppose however, that Mankind can not exist without clinging to something which in Man's mind alludes to security, to foundation. It is too frightening NOT to say : "Well, I am here, but it troubles me to accept that I have no guarantee, as to where I come from . . So I'll look for respite in what I'll create as a Supreme Being, who as a deciding for me, a parental figure becomes.
It happens in Buddhism too.
I used to volunteer at the Centre for Meditation. Of course my service only lasted one day... because I had another practitioner along side with me. And we were filling 7 bowls of water to symbolize purification. And some with sand, for some unknown reason to me. And on the wall, were frightening paintings of Wrathful deities. And many vows of reverence we'd have to make all through the process of setting up the altar . . so that I said to the other helper, "I'll bet you ANYTHING, to proof the original Buddha did not even think that all this paraphernalia, would in time be attached to him. . . Now you tell me, where is the simplicity he taught? These things have nothing to do with his teachings for Goodness' sake. It is all man created to make him feel more secure, can't you see?"
Well, next day at my arrival at the Centre, I was told, my volunteering had been suspended, because I was an agitator! . . . "Okay, fine with me, I'd rather be expelled than being a hypocrite!" End of THAT, story.

I find that it is not much different than most other religions as far as control goes. Outside of the basic teachings there is a very strong function of social control in most of the places it was practiced. For a great examp[le of that you only need to look at Tibetan Buddhism.
(Penn and Teller did an excellent show on the Dalai Lama if you can still find it)
I like the basic philosophy of Buddhist thought, but like all religions it became more concerned with its own survival once it got established.

I have visited Thailand many times where the population are mainly Buddhists and I cannot think of a single thing that I do not like about it. I found it a very gentle religion who only seek peace unlike many others who want to ram their thoughts down you throat and if you disagree they want to kill you. Example Christians and Muslims have been at war with each other since time began.

What is there not to like about Buddhism?
By the way (you know who you are) Buddhist dont use or train in kung fu, thats shaolin monks.

And At least they dont come round knocking on your fcuking door trying to convert you like Jehovas and bloody christians.

Bring back the colloseum and feed these door knockers to the Lions. I for one would pay good money to see this happen.

because all it tells you to do mainly is be a good person and help others, it never mentions anything about marriage so lusting after a woman also is counted as trying to make love with your wife lol

its too....bland, you just be a good person and you die and your next life comes, man life would be pretty boring if it were like that

I like Buddhism better than any other religion, but the one thing I don't like about it is reincarnation.
