A dog should not be permanently tethered outside as a life. I don't have a problem with tying them up for short times to go potty, but you have to be responsible and keep an eye on them and definitely protect them from attackers.

I think it's cruel to chain a dog you can create a monster just because you chain him/her everyday. If you want a dog you should first make sure you have the right facilities which can be that you keep him/her in the house and walk him/her at least four or more times a day and make sure that he/she has enough water and toys so that she doesn't get bored and chews on your stuff, it can also be that you leave him/her in the yard the whole day to do what he/she wants while making sure she/he has a dry, warm place in the shade like a dog-house where he/she can rest, toys and enough water at all times and last but not least you can do what I do have a combination of both ways which are just leaving the door open and having a yard so that they can be both inside or outside. Hope this helps. Besides dogs can choke on a chain, iv'e seen it happen.

No dogs should not be chained up if you need your dog for security reason then make sure you have a good area fenced off and well locked so the dog can not get out and can look after the property. This will also help to protect the dog from others, make sure he has some where he can have good cover from the weather hot,wet or cold and he has plenty of water.

Yes i do, they are better to be chained up then get smashed on the road.
My mom lives close to the road and so many dogs and cats have gotten ran over so tying them up is really helping the dog out by not getting ran over by an 18 wheeler.
What do you people think?
Tie them up or let them get killed on the road or let someone steal them cause dogs will not stay put.
As long as a dog has enough room and length on the chain, a doghouse and food , what is the big deal?
Oh yea by the way, my mom does have a fence up around her property but that does not make a dog stay within the fence.
I have seen too many dogs get killed on the road cause they was not tied up or they got loose.

No. There is a time and place for them to be chained like on camping trips to keep them confined to one area so they don't disturb other campers or if you don't have a fenced yard and can not trust them not to bolt out of the yard when they are out to go potty and evan then I would not leave them for long .But other than that they should not be left on a chain for prolonged periods of time.
I have alot invested in my dogs. It's a lifetime commitment and I'm not going to waste any time I could be enjoying them by forcing them to stay outside on a chain and I find it disturbing that people do it to dogs but allow their children to run rampant and wreak havoc on their neighbors without thought or care.

No! If a dog gets chianed up outside for too long it will develop a condition called Alpha Dog Syndrome. When a dog has this condition it can go from being a sweet and gentle dog to a do that will growl and bite everytime it is touched. I once had a dog with this conditon and we had to hive it away. It was not fun. I recommend a crate. A crate is a great alternative to a chain because you do not have to worry about your dog and vetrinarians say that dogs feel secure while they are in them.

I do and i don't. It is not good to have a dog changed up all the time. They can get mean and very agressive around people and children. The only time i would chain a dog up was when i was outside working in the yard or somthing and i did not want them running around by them self.

A dog on a chain gets more exercise than a dog in a pen or in the house. Mushers keep their dogs chained for this reason. Hounds that are used for hunting bears are kept on chains for the same reason. Sled dogs kept on a chain also learn to deal with minor tangles when they are in harness better than dogs who are kept in pens. Chained dogs are less likely to escape and get into trouble than dogs in pens. I know you will get a lot of answers condemning people who keep dogs on chains. I wanted to give some positive reasons for chains.

Dog's are social animals and should NOT be chained up outside. It leaves them feeling isolated from the rest of the "pack". It can cause them to become depressed and many of them are so excited when they finally get a little attention that they scare off their social partner by jumping on them. They just can't contain themselves because they are so lonely.
Even just chaining them out to go to the bathroom is a bad idea because many times they need to "mark' their territory. Putting them on a chain, they may look at this as playtime and not potty time. They don't want to pee in their play zone so they hold it and do it in the house instead. If they are allowed a fenced in area, this gives them room to mark the area's around the yard and actually empty themselves out. Taking them for a walk does the same thing.
I think Chaining up a dog is the lazy person's way of being a pet owner. If a person didn't want to take care of the pet they have, then they shouldn't have gotten one in the first place. Pets take work, but if done right.... the reward is priceless.
EDIT:
Ways to keep your dog so that tying them up is not needed.
-train them so they obey and train them to know their property line.
- fence the yard in and examine the fence on a regular basis so they can not get out under the fence. (also make sure the fence is high enough that they can not jump over)
- Let them be indoor dogs. (Bathe them regular so they don't stink and groom them to keep shedding to a minimum)
- Train them not to chew up your things if they are left alone inside. (or crate train them)
- take the time to walk them for potty breaks if you do not have a fenced in yard for them. (wow, what a concept... actually taking the time to walk a dog) *I walk my dog 4 x a day for potty breaks.

If you supervise I think it might be ok, like of you are doing yard work or someting, but I don't think its ok to leave, and leave the dog outside, but these days people don't like using leashes and dogs have to go outside so "chained up" is vital to some people. I don't think its right to leave dogs chained up.
