A soft buttery yellow or cream will help to balance the dark colors you already have.
A pastel peach will warm the room and make it feel cozy.
Khaki/Tan/Beige would be safe without being boring white.
Regardless of the paint color add a couple of green plants to make the room come alive. Add a large mirror to reflect light and keep the room from bright. Throw pillows in a combination of brown and whatever wall color you choose will tie it all together. A vase and candles with the same colors will add a little extra flair. A picture of a landscape or flowers or whatever subject you prefer with a combination of these colors and others will add some pop to the room.

You will probably end up with a room that looks like it belongs in a magazine! :)
Hope these ideas help.

If you're going with the dark furnishings and white trim, I'd say go with a light green or perhaps a muted orange to brighten the room. Get some samples to see what appeals to you. You might want to try a light, textured wallpaper. Samples are bigger, and will give you a better idea of how it will look.

I'd paint the walls a lighter tone of a caramel or toffee shade to tie in the brown carpet and to soften and complement the black leather couches.

Sherwin Williams Compatible Cream.
It leans to the yellow/gold side. It's beautiful as a backdrop for black. It's easy to work with in the future if you change furniture or decor. It will definately work for living rooms and kitchens. It's not a bold gold, but a creamy gold.

in the kitchen u should use a rich, dark red- like a cranberry perhaps. and maybe in the living room you could use pinks, pale greens, and turquoise or other blues to the wall.

Paint the living room a green, like "Jungle Fever" by Dulux, and then paint the kitchen one of the suggested coordinating colors, like "nordic sails," "jewelled creek," or "chakly downs."

My i suggest dark red, green, or blue. Dark, rich colors are best compatable with colors such as dark brown and black.

I would do a golden rod like this color in this room:

And then bring accent colors in throws, pillows, drapes, accessories, wall art, etc., of cinnamon red and moss green, and maybe a bit of amber... (here are some ideas for inspiration):
