Its a wooden/stone container filled with hay used to feed sheep or cattle. Since there was no room in the inn the Holy Family was forced to make shelter inside of a stable and the manger was warm and dry, so it was used as a cradle for the Christ Child.

A manger is a trough or box of carved stone or wood construction used to hold food for animals (as in a stable). Mangers are mostly used in livestock raising. They are also used to feed wild animals, e.g., in nature reserves. It is what Jesus as a newborn baby slept in.

Good questions to keep us thinking about Christmas and the reason for the season.
A manger is where Christ was placed in shortly after He was born, apart from its usual purpose. :)
God bless you.
