My son was recently diagnosed with bipolar with manic tendencies which when he doesnt take his meds, he has phycotic and schizo episodes and hears things. He thinks he will take over the world, etc. I, too, went on zoloft. Im trying to cope as best i can. The drama and trauma in my house is endless. My husband is constantly fighting with my son to take his meds. He has been in and out of mental institutes. He even escaped for one and was brought back twice. He dropped out of his last year of college, opened a store, and exhausted his life savings. My son is 21 and I really dont know what to do but pray. I said a novena and hope he gets better somehow either with meds or with Gods great help. My heart goes out to u. Hang in there. Things have got to get better. They cant get n e worse, can they? Dont ask.

I am the schizophrenic in our family. I am coping very well thank you and the family is doing OK. I was diagnosed with schizophrenia paranoia over 40 years ago. I became unemployed and my wife divorced me. We had 4 children. I was put on medications almost from the beginning which I resisted until my mother quietly told me I was a different and likable person when I was taking my meds. I went back to school (University) and attended for several years until I got employment in my profession.

I never remarried but devoted myself to my children who I missed terribly because I was not near them. But a couple of them came to live with me later on in life. I have been on medications all my life which seem to help the auditory hallucinations if not the visual ones. As long as I'm on my meds I am OK. I deem my recovery to the TLC of family, the medical community and medications plus the fact that I have undergone much psychotherapy.

Good luck with your schizophrenic son. good mental health, peace and Love! Have a merry Christmas!

It is difficult dealing with family members who have such severe depression problems. Always make sure they are aware you are there for them and your concern for their well being.

As far as you having to take antidepressants ... I personally feel that some times we all need a little extra help. It doesn't necessarily mean that you may have to take them forever, but if it helps you cope with the situation ... take them by all means.
