that is so true.
i totally agree with ya. i mean as long as 'one' can read it..whats the problem?
but i think people say comments like 'go learn english' because, they just want the points and have no solution to your answers.
secondly, i know i do it, as the characters are limited and when you want to give every bit of detaile for a question, you have to shortern the words up.
otherwise if we didnt, then we whould have to right a lot more and more, which may exceed onto the 'additional details' part.
and lets face it, from first look of a lengthy question just puts most people off. so ither no one will answer, or they will just say as u mentioned...'go learn english'or 'its too long to answer'
people need to not care about these things. besides how do you know if the person is dyslexic?
people need to be sensitive.
besides sometimes the english spelling makes me laugh. i mean whats the point of spelling words that when half of them are 'silent'. :D lol.
like night...or knight...please!
oofie!
ok
thats it
im out
adios!
oh and i can i just add that, its also very annoying that if we do right in this shortened way, people dont take us seriously. as in they think your a chil or something, even if you are an adult, and therefore wont give you a proper answer as they think you are not muture enuff or something!

On one hand, spelling is not a definite indicator of intelligence. On the other hand, a misspelling stands out and is much more easily identified than more weighty matters. Some people will jump on that with a vengeance. Also, spelling is taught in its basic forms in lower elementary school so that the lack of use of standard spelling is considered to be a basic lack of education. It can be a wrong-headed inference, but it's still there. Like it or not, we are all stuck with a spelling system that comes from the use of an alphabet (Roman) that was designed for a language other than English (Latin). Not only that, the spellings started to become standardized about the time the printing press came into common use in Europe, in the late 1400s, when a massive change in vowel usage happened. So, you have to spell late Middle English while speaking Modern English. Add to that the fact that we have borrowed both words AND spelling from their original languages. I am sorry for your difficulties, but to be part of a larger group, you're stuck with using the same spellings that we all have to/had to learn. You are not stupid, no. But if I were to make typos or spelling mistakes, I would be judged the same as you. I hope that didn't sound overbearing, but if it did, I apologize. It's what we all live with.

Although I don't care really about this matter personally, I know a lot of people do.
I think for some people they do find it difficult to understand things that are poorly written or put together, and after all that IS the point of writing ~ to communicate with others!
There are also some people who feel that poor grammar and spelling reflects on the education system or the effort people put into their posts.
Why they get so personally involved, I'm not sure.
If I find a question too difficult to read, I usually just go onto another. I'm sure many people who don't get more than one or two responses would find they could get more if they improved their communication, but that is their choice.
Cheers :-)

You're right that the rudeness is usually uncalled for. I guess if someone is so into propriety and proper expression, he could just articulate his request for better English. lol
I happen to love good grammar and proper English. I also happen to write typos, and sometimes not use caps when I am really tired.
I say it is important to use proper English and make an effort to spell correctly, because people are trying to communicate and it is easier and more clear to read proper English and grammar. Also, non-native speakers will not understand gibberish.
I think it is a sign of respect to write well, and a sign of self-respect, too.
Sylistically, I like to see writing done well. Occasionally, slang or shortcuts make a point, but reading it too long is tiring.
I also don't want to see the rules totally erode. Have you ever read olde English, where there were no rules on spelling and printers would just add letters where there were extra spaces? It is so hard to get through. Let's not go back to those barbaric days, shall we?

YOU are very judgmental and think that YOUR opinion is important. Some of us think it is plain rude and arrogant of SOME PEOPLE to ignore Check Spelling. Why should I fight through a question and give a thoughtful answer when the Asker is too damn lazy to at least do the minimum, which is using the Check Spelling. I don't blast a few typos, or even moderately bad grammar. But lousy spelling compounded with stupid question equals great fodder for personal attacks.

short hand texting should not, should not be the way to go..lazy writing becomes habit.
the saying goes, people judge you by the words you use, and your actions speak louder than words.
understanding is not the issue, knowing how to spell a word, and knowing what it means, means you are using your brain, instead of taking countless short cuts.
remember the days, when we called folks instead of email, and actually sent a letter in the mail.
old and tradition doesnt mean antiquity..and I bet some have to look that word up.
They even did a tv report on this very subject..most folks prefer if you write correctly....don't you get tired of hearing aint aint aint, aks, I will write a question that I see is spellled right, before I answer one that is done in text short hand.
Use your brain, and stop being lzy!!!! now that one was a joke.
Some of you might recall the days of getting up to change the channel, before the remote.
We did have a time when cells where just in the body, not the phone.
Thats why its a big deal....you were taught to read and write, thousands and thousands more are illiterate in this country, with no one to teach them, and yes illiterate means you can't read, and barely write...although many of them, are very clever, and you would never know..I used to teach literacy..so dont be lazy, use what you know..and put the bloody ipod down, and read!!!!!

the occasional typo is no big deal to me ,Ive had it happen myself, where i get going too fast and switch letters or hit the wrong key . but Spell check usually takes care of that.
I do know that several times spell check has been on the fritz and just spins uselessly, but for the most part it works. So I do get irritated with those too lazy to use it.
I agree with you however about the ones who seem to hover about to correct others grammar and spelling.
One day I worked hard and fast on an answer, just to have the questioner tell me in an edit that-- Had I not forgotten my punctuation ,I would have had the perfect answer! but he would not vote for someone who ran their sentences together! LOL X2 How anal is that?
Texting makes me angry ! Its not as though you have to pay for each letter you use here, Its free! use as many as you need to make yourself understood.
I wont even read a texted question and would never vote for a texted answer.
but for the most part I'm accepting and forgiving towards the imperfect question.

here's the thing, there are many of us who believe that the proper use of grammar suggests a higher level of intelligence. Generally I don't worry to much about spelling errors, however I absolutely abhor IM type. "wuz" is not a word, nor is "wot" or whatever else is used... to me its stupid and those that use it on a daily basis are the same. Speaking properly gives the impression of culture, intelligence, and education. Perhaps those that are commenting on your lack of grammar are suggesting that you aren't smart enough, therefore your question isn't intelligent? I hope that helps. This may be an informal forum, but that doesn't mean that your grammar should be lax, and there is spell check.

I know what you mean, but a lot of people tend to speak in text-talk now, so it takes you ages to try to figure out what they mean.
I have higher than average spelling capabilities, but my brother is dyslexic, so I know all about people that find it difficult to spell.
On YA I will only mention spelling if there is a funny mistake (like 'missing the L in 'public'), or if it's really hard to understand them.

I happen to be one of those who chastise anyone who can't spell or thinks they are doing an IM or text. This is not the forum to be acting like little kids texting their girlfriend or boyfriend under the desk in class....and the grammer issue should speak for itself.....it shows a lack of education, or a lacksidasical attitude towards presenting yourself as someone intelligent and worth talking to. If you can't spell or want to act like a kid, go somewhere else....this forum is intended for people who genuinely have a need to know things on a specific subject that they might not otherwise know where to get the information....and there are many of us on here who are experts or educated in our specific fields of knowledge who are willing and able to give information on whatever the subject may be....so yes it matters to some of us.....obviously the more intelligent and educated of the bunch. If you ask a question with poor grammer and spelling it makes you look stupid and if you answer one with poor grammer and spelling then it impinges on your credibility as someone who knows what they are talking about. This is what the world is coming to i'm afraid....calculators in the classroom and spell check on computers are dumbing down the population as a whole and it shows by the ones who would even bother asking a question like this.....do you really think when you go somewhere to get a job that they would even look twice at your application if you type and spell the way some do on here? It boils down to pride in yourself and the way you present yourself to the public, and alot of you obviously don't care if you look like uneducated illiterate morons....
