Thanks, but NO you cannot buy them in the local supermarket. They are glace' cherries for cooking.
Maraschino cherries preserved in an almond syrup and are generally used in cocktails and are very hard to find.
I have since posting found one delicatessen in Burleigh Heads that actually supplies them.
