He's had a sore throat since yesterday, and it was itchy on Tuesday. Later this afternoon he started losing his voice and coughing up some mucus, and when he coughs his chest hurts, and it sounds like the "smoker's cough". He is not congested, nor does he have a headache or any other pains. Any ideas on what this could be?

that sounds like the virus that is doing the rounds in Queensland. It lasts about a week. Any longer than that go see the doc.

if he has strep you can look down his throat and see if you can see tiny white bumbs. If hes only been sick for a couple days, he probably just has a chest cold. If hes prone to bronchitis, have him see a Dr. Otherwise, it will probably clear up in a couple weeks. It is cold and flu season. Also - if the mucous is yellow or green its a sign of infection...clear its fine.

Could be a bacterial infection that has traveled from his throat to his chest. His chest is probably hurting from coughing. Should see a Doctor and get it treated.

Sounds like a cold. Vitamin C works, he can eat lots of citrus fruits (i.e. clementines, oranges...) and try drinking sage tea - both always work for me when I have those type of symptoms.

Hmmmm, wheezing flu is common this time of year. Take Robutusin and wait it out. Doesn't go away overnight....couple weeks actually.

Could be pneumonia too. Best to get a chest xray.

that kind of cold and flu stuff is just going around, it shouldn't be anything serious.

if he has a fever, it is likely a bacterial infection and he needs antibiotics, if not, then it is viral bronchitis and he just needs rest and lots of fluids.
