There are much worse ways to go. Besides, crucifixion in and of itself isn't generally lethal, unless you're left up for a very long time.

lilmissykato: Been there, done that. Two other members of my unit have felt it as well, including one who posts on here. Hanging would have been a better idea, because the person who is hung doesn't normally get lose and rip your heart out.

People act like crucifixion is a terrible way to die because most have not been exposed to the degree of evil and pain that you have. You have been places, seen and done things most people can’t even imagine. Many of the people who responded to this question sit in a comfortable house and turn the thermostat to 68 degrees because 65 degrees was unbearable, reach for some aspirin because their head aches a little and whine about the rain forecast for the weekend. Torture and death seem a lot more difficult in the comfort of one’s home than they do when you are in the situation with your adrenaline pumping and you survival instincts and training kicking in. Nobody would chose crucifixion over other less painful ways to die, but there are much, much worse, time consuming, and cruel methods of execution and torture. On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the worst, I’d give crucifixion about a 5 or 6 depending on circumstances. And many of the worst forms of death come to us through diseases that a god could prevent if ‘he’ felt so inclined to live up to his reputation of being all loving and merciful.

For a Murderer; He would have a Fair Trial;
Roman appointed Counslor would say,If anyone Here knows anything Good about This Man and state His Name;Step up and Tell It;That never Happened in Jesus case;No call went out;Also Jesus had only done good;An Innocent Man Beat to a mass of Bleeding Flesh--Thorns shove into His Brow again and again ;I believe the Buzzards
would start eating before a Man died unless a friend would run them off;-------You think You are Man enough to not do some screaming,The thing that concerned Jesus was the Separation of His Father, when the Sins of a God Hateing World was placed on Him; It was only A Short Time,But that was Long For Jesus,He had always been with the Father;I left out the part that the Spinal Colunm laid open with all Nerves Exposed would make most Men Pass out,This is the Part, with One Word He could have Destroyed Everyone Rome, Jewish People and everyone Else;He could have done that and left Man as Misreable Rejects,But He would not use that power;

You know, I'm thinking someone like Vlad the impaler should have been called in for this job. If the purpose was to cause the most suffering for yourself, then making sure you get impaled on a spike through your privates might have been the better way to go. After all, he's supposed to be suffering enough to wash away the sins of all of us undeserving humans. Unfortunately, having that done would have taken away the whole idea of Jesus being a virgin. : |

Now I'm going to have to spend the rest of the evening trying to pretend my brain didn't just come up with this!

Well, crucifixion was a terrible way to die. Jesus was in fact treated extra horrible in the way he was treated prior to the crucifixion as well.

However, this was the standard method of execution at the time, in that place. As I recall, there were two others crucified with Him.

Actually, crucifixion is generally lethal, because they did leave both Him and others there for a very long time. You die by slow asphyxiation. You can not fill your lungs completely with air, so you try to stand up on your impaled feet to inhale better, but this is too painful, so you go back down, until your oxygen level forces you to push up again, and so on, over and over. Eventually, lack of oxygen makes you weak, so that you are unable to push up anymore, and you eventually die from lack of oxygen.

Why do you ask? Do you think we should institute this method of execution? Would crucifixion be your chosen method of death if you had to be executed and got to choose?

I don't believe that any of Jesus' disciples lived out their natural lives, and several were executed by this method. Of those, several chose to be crucified upside-down, because they were not worthy to die by the same method as their Savior.

There may be worse ways to die, but crucifixion was a very cruel means of capital punishment--meaning, it was done to execute people. Do you imagine that hanging there like that is pleasant, while you slowly drown in your own body fluids? That's how it kills you: you can't breathe.
What people don't understand is that crucifixion was not invented for Jesus. It's how the Romans executed those guilty of (usually) political crimes. If they'd have had the electric chair back then, that's what the Christians would be wearing around their necks and putting on top of their churches.

truth is, the crucifixion of Jesus goes far beyond just the nailing to the cross. it was a whole suffering and sacrifice experience, that encompassed both physical and spiritual elements. it was an entire process of suffering for the sake of all mankind. that being said, in this context, the physical aspect of the crucifixion was only the tip of the iceburg of mortal suffering. add to that the spiritual suffering and the experience is an immense torture ordeal. taking all things into perspective, the weight of the physical suffering of crucifixion is still quite heavy, and was, in fact, one of the most agonizing ways to die back then.

it takes days of starving to kill ya.... what often happened is the people would bend their knees to get some releif but would have to stand back up after a while so to make things worse for them (to speed up the dying) the guards often broke their legs..

dehyrdration and starvation are pretty painful ways to die...

however impailure like Vlad Dracula did was even more nasty...

heck is there really a good way to die?? I guess in your sleep is about it...

I dunno enigma. I agree there are worse ways to go ~ william wallace anyone? However crucifixion seems like a pretty harsh way to go because it is such a slow death. It's not being nailed to a cross but being left there for days until death that makes me nauseous and weak in the knees thinking about it.

Been there, done that? I'm truly sorry to hear that. I hope your wounds have healed ~ all of them.

Crucifixion would've been a horrible way to die.
You were tied or nailed to a cross and left to die.
It could take anywhere from hours to DAYS for you to finally pass on.
It is assumed that those who were crucified died from asphyxiation, a painful condition where you are slowly suffocated due to lack of oxygen. This was because the position of outstretched arms on crosses made it difficult to breathe. To breathe better, you had to hunch your shoulders and put pressure on the wrists that have nails driven through the NERVES (how painful would THAT be?!). Eventually that would get so painful you would have to relax your body again, making breathing difficult once more.
Sometimes the Romans would break your legs to make you die more quickly.

It was probably extremely painful.

You should REALLY do some research. 7" spikes were driven through the wrists and the ankles and then the person was left to hang. In the position of a T - the human body can't breath unless you lift yourself up by your pierced wrists. That's painful so the body sags. The lungs can't expand properly and fluid builds up. Eventually you drown and that usually takes more than 3 days. Some athletes lasted more than 5 days. Extreme agony for a prolonged period of time.
