a stent is sometimes placed in the duct connecting the liver to the intestines, so bile can be delivered. in other words, removing the gall bladder can cause trauma and irritation to that duct, a stent keeps it from swelling shut.

Depends on the operation. Stents in general are tubing scaffolds put in place to open a narrowed spot. For the gall bladder, it may go in the urethra.
