The ceiling does not need to be painted, but the windows and trim do. There would only be one painter and I am using a oil base primer and semi gloss paint Two walls have already been primed and the other two still need to be done. He wants to charge by the hour and says it would take about 8-10 hours. Doesnt seem right to me, if I have already started the work.

I have already started it. I have lower back problems stemming from surgery and it is getting hard to do. Since I was already started, 8-10 hours seemed a lot to me too. I already have everything taped off. There are two doors in the room, and these are the walls that need to be done, for both priming and painting, the other walls, which each have a window only need to be painted. The trim is at the floor level only.

Oh, I did forget to mention. He is the only painter in town and feels that he can charge as he pleases. Next closest town with a painter is 35 miles away, and they want travel money too. I was going to try to keep it local, for the economy and to keep in good with the neighbors, but being overcharged now has to be my first priority. And he doesnt want to negotiate.

I did the prep work because I started the job myself, based on the fact that I was going to finish it myself. The room is approximately 10 x 10. He said that what I had done so far was good for him and wouldnt need to be redone.
His price is 45.00 per hour. I just said that it seemed high to me and that there are others to do it, just not locally. Some of you seem to be getting bent out of shape, because you are in the business and feel that I am insulting you by asking questions about the cost. I did not ask for anything other than to know if the time was too much to paint an average size room. I only responded by adding in info that people were commenting on.
I am allowed my own opinion and should be allowed to phrase it to the best of my ability without having someone repeatedly take offense. This is in writing only and maybe if there were an outlet where it could be explained verbally, i would have done better. I hope all the cynics see this and think twice before answering.

The general rule of thumb for finding the optimal viewing distance (and thus the size of the tv) for LCDs and Plasmas is to multiply the tv size by 3. So if you have a 32" flat panel tv, you would sit back at 96" (or 8 feet) from the tv for the optimal picture. For a 42" tv, it would become 126" (or just over 10 feet 6 inches). I would say that as long as you sat clearly on the complete opposite side of the 12' x 12' room you could go for the 42". But otherwise I'd say go for a 32" or maybe even a 37" if you want something bigger. Now this doesn't have anythign to do with hurting your eyes or whatnot, it is just the recommendation for the distance to see the best defined picture. Actually, I've been going through the same question recently. My bdrm is 8' x 15' and I've been trying to figure it out what size. I found a 32" Sharp Aquos for $1099 at Circuit City on Sunday that I almost picked up. That would have worked from either direction in my bdrm.

I live in Northtown Co-Op Housing in Welland Ont. My husband and I painted the living room, master bedroom and our daughters room. The master bedroom was a medium gray, living room was a light tan and the daughters room was a light purple. The Co-Op claims that when they had to go into our former unit to prep, paint and that it took them 57hrs @ 4 coats/rm. The room with medium grey, ya maybe. But as for the other rooms? Not likely.
What do you all think??

The painting doesn't take that long, it's the taping and such that does. I did my children's rooms, taping and setting up took up most of the time, but once I broke out the paint, took about an hour or so to paint the entire room. Hope it helps.

8 - 10 seems high. I think that I could do a bedroom in 1/2 day.

I would ask around town for a nice do it your selfer type person to do it. Painting isn't so difficult if someone has had experience. They do not need to be a painting business to do it. Go to your hardware store and ask the owner if he knows of anyone who would like to make a few extra $$ to help you out. This guy is ripping you off.

it is way too much. try to stay in the room, he will work faster than that.
and negotiate. tell him: fine 9 hrs, but cut the pay, in such a way that he will hurry. as long as you don't have a time limit, tell him, he can do it in 2 days, but you cut the $/hr.
after all, he is not the only pro painter in town. and not having a written contract, it is free for you to negotiate. it is your money, and "not the one who asks is stupid..."

get some guts, and bargain like in a Turkish bazaar.
