I just found out that I have hypermobility syndrome. I am suppost to start physical therapy soon. I have never gone to physical therapy. Can anyone tell me what to expect?

Hypermobility effects all of my joints. The main problems are my arms, fingers, legs (hip, knee and ankles) and big toes.

The first day will mostly be a day for checking things out, taking baseline measurements and tests. There will be a physical exam...sometimes some of those things cause discomfort so we can understand what is injured...but please know that that is not our goal each session. Based on the exam, they will help you establish goals and design a treatment program...it will probably involve some time of strengthening exercise, some of which will need to be done at home.

Wear or bring comfortable clothes. Be honest about your answers and medical history.

good luck with your rehab.

You do not state what joints are causing the problem. I have Arthritis, so do a lot of PT. Usually the first day if just questions, might examine the joint or joints. Then they will make another appointment, give them time to devise the best program for you. When you return they will start whatever program they think is best for you. I am lucky insofar as I have jogging pants that zip from the ankles up to the hip, so no longer have to remove my pants. Likewise I do not wear a bra, always wear a vest. However I am sure the PT will tell you what to bring to the next appointment in the way of clothing. Enjoy.

It will be hard at first, you will hurt from it for awhile. But if you stick with it you will have a far better life not only now but in the future as you age.
I have a cervical spine injury and getting through the PT after surgery was tough but I'm happy I did it now that it's 10 years later.

You may be tempted to quit or say it's not helping but hang in there

Give it everything you have and you will feel the benefits for years. Good Luck
