Where in California are you allowed to wander around in the "forest" and cut a tree down? How inept do have to be to get "lost" in the 1st place???

I live in the mountains. You see stories all the time about great rescues, or how someone heroically got themselves to safety.

Many times (not always) it starts when someone does something foolish.

You can cut one Christmas tree for your own use in many National Forests. They may set aside a special area, and you have to get a permit:

Clearly you have never spent any time out in the woods.

The report I saw said they went from tree to tree, looking for the perfect one. It's easy to concentrate on the trees and not pay attention to your direction, or where the sun is, or any other clues about direction or position. The report also said that there was heavy cloud cover, making it hard to determine direction from the sun or moon.
