I'm having family over for Christmas Eve, and we'll be drinking wine. I want to do appetizers that go with. I want to do what I call a "french dinner". What I mean by that is great breads, cheeses, olives..etc. Suggestions? Not only on types of bread and cheese, but other items that might be great with this spread. Thanks for answering and Happy Holidays!

It sounds delicious and very elegant!!

Try the Italian garlic oil & bread idea. Get a bottle of good olive oil. Peel 3-5 cloves of garlic and put them in the oil, whole, and let sit overnight (or longer). For your dinner, let the guests pour some of the garlic oil onto a small plate. Sprinkle with salt and pepper, then tear up a nice italian bread into pieces. Dip the bread into the oil & eat it. It's simple and so delicious!

I think I'd make a big pot of great soup to go with this, such as a French onion soup with toppings or a very light creamy seafood bisque.

I'd include fruit too, apple slices and pear slices, for example, are wonderful with cheese and bread.

Of course you don't need us to tell you to have a variety of cheeses, from mild to sharp, and from hard to soft.

Best of luck.

1. Bagna Cauda is always nice: steam fresh veges until crisp tender and then put immediately in an ice bath to stop the cooking. Serve with an anchovie/olive oil dipping sauce.
2. A series of country terrines and/or pate's are nice. I really like one called Mousse Truffee. Serve with great artisan breads.
3. You might consider a platter of french ham, sausages, and salami's to add to your feast. These go great with good mustard, such as Maille's Dijon Mustard.
4. French Onion Soup
5. Quiche lorraine
6. Rustic pear tart

Here is a link to a site that lists different types of wine and what types of food pairs best with it. This should help you decide which food you would like to serve with the wine you will be having. I hope it's helpful!

Baked brie with cranberry chutney
Have some dipping oils with the breads - herb infused olive oil, etc.
Also have some crudites to give some color to the spread.
