This is the 8th week that I have had wheezing, shortness of breath, adventitious breath sounds. I went to the MD and got an albuterol neb, an inhaler, and antibiotics. Just finished the antibiotics on 12/15 and still have same physical complaints. Should I go back to the MD?

Wow, so many responses so quick. Thank you.

He did take a chest x-ray which showed that my lungs hold in air when they should be exhaling.

I don't think it is whooping cough because I only cough occasionally and it is nonproductive.

I am taking my inhaler correctly. Two puffs, one minute apart. I exhale completely and then inhale while I depress the inhaler. Tongue under mouth piece. Hold for 10 seconds. Repeat in one minute.

Worse at night. No fever. Sleeping on several pillows - which is not my norm. But have to sleep at an angle to not wheeze. Don't think it is PND, because it has been at times other than sleep/lying.

Yes you do need to go back to the dr. Your symptoms could be numerous things. Antibotics are only going to help if you had an infection and it was bacterial in nature. if is viral they won't help, it has to run it's course. However, it may not be an infection, you may have allergies, asthma, or bronchiolitis, all of which can be treated with albuterol, but may need other medications as well, such as steroids, or sustain released bronchodilators. Is the wheezing worse at certain times and are you running a temp? make sure you tell the dr.

Definitely go back for a recheck because it does not sound like you are getting better and probably a different treatment plan is needed. Be sure to document any improvements or exacerbations and if that Dr. does not do a further work up or treat you differently get a second opinion.

Had a similar problem. You might need a more potent antibiotic, I forgot what mine was, but it was really expensive even with my insurance ($110). Did your Dr. have you take an x-ray? that's how my Dr. found out that I had an inflamed lung, and I had a slight Pneumonia.

I surely would. You don't say what your diagnosis is, but the albuterol only treats the symptom shortness of breath. The antibiotic may not have been strong enough.

it's the time of year when respiratory ailments come around.
i had that same experience just this year. after weeks of taking antibiotics, cough medicines and nebulizers, i still felt uncomfortable. anyway, i suggest you go to a Pulmonologist...mine removed all my antibiotics and he treated me for "ALLERGIES". He put me under "virlix" ( a type of anti-histamine) for 5 days, oral antiseptic (gargled twice a day) and nasal spray. Magically as it sounds.......i felt better in just two days.

so, yes go back to your doctor or...seek for a pulmonologist.

Are you taking your inhaler the right way?

you probably should, and also tell him if you have any allergy problems. allergies can affect your breathing too. i take benadryl once in a while and had a wheezing problem before too.

yes. if you have a bacterial infection and it did not clear up on antibiotics, it may be resistant strain.
