I heard somewhere they don't consider it real meat. Why not? Birds and fish sure as heck aren't vegetables.

If you are referring to the flexi/exsft (sp?)/skully/fake trace/etc. trolls saying they are vegetarians while they eat meat... I'm sorry you have encountered any of these people. They get their kicks out of spreading falsified information about vegetarianism. Just ignore anything they have to say.

If you are referring to people in general thinking vegetarians can eat fish, keep this in mind: By definition, half of the population has below average intelligence. Every other person you meet is an idiot.

Vegetarians don't eat chicken or fish... ever. Anyone that thinks otherwise is confused.

::edit::
Another "gem" from Skully...

"However, this is changing. Now we use the word "flexitarian vegetarian" to define those whose diet is primarily 70-90% vegetarian and the rest plant based. We are just like the Japanese, Indians, Chinese, etc. vegetarians."

If 70-90% of your diet is vegetarian, and the rest is plant based (also vegetarian), then it is completely vegetarian. Your tripping on your own faulty logic at this point... maybe it's time for you to retire.

So-called flexitarians (note: there really is no such thing, they are just picky eaters) eat meat, and are not vegetarian.

You are not like the Japanese, etc. "vegetarians", because they were never vegetarians. While a percentage of these cultures are and were veg*ns, only the percentage that didn't eat meat can correctly be named vegetarian. It is a very simple concept and I'm sorry that you cannot grasp it.

NO vegetarian eats poultry or fish. It simply defies the definition of vegetarian. Some people have a weird concept of the word "meat," but you can take that right out of the equation. Birds and fish are animals and vegetarians don't eat animals.

Overheard today: "You may not think fish are the brightest of god's creatures, but calling them a vegetable just seems a little harsh..."

A true vegetarian eat NO meat at all. However some over the years have started eating fish and chicken for health concerns, like iron deficiency. I think it has become a personal choice, however 7th Day Adventist do not eat meat of any kind. Hope this helps.

I have to agree. Real vegetarians don't eat any type of meat from any living animal. It IS considered real meat. Some people like to just say they are vegetarians but don't know how much really goes into it. It's a way of life. NOT a diet!

I'm ready to be tarred and faux-feathered.
If I'm at the boss's cookout, and she says, "Here, have a burger." I can say
A: " No, thanks. I'm a pescetarian. What's a pescatarian, you ask? It's someone who eats seafood, but no other meat. I don't eat factory meats, because I think it is a form of animal abuse, and am weaning off of eggs and dairy for the same reason."

Or

B: "No, thanks. I'm a vegetarian."

Vegetarian is a word people recognize, even if they are fuzzy on the details. I don't describe myself as a vegetarian on this site, because definitions are posted hourly.
I don't want to always be on a soapbox, especially when I barely know people and I don't like discussing my ethics at every get-together. I usually try to find a way for it not to come up, like have my plate so full of salad that no one notices I didn't get the ribs.

Well, as a vegan, I've heard people brag "Oh I've been a vegan for three weeks now" while stuffing fish fillet in their mouth.... Some people just don't understand. Also with vegetarianism, you have to watch out. Producers disquise animal products with other words. Cellulite is fat, but some people don't know. So study different food vocab.

Well from a chef's perspective "meat" is red meat, the poultry and fish are different categories. But you can't be vegetarian and eat those things. I don't eat red meat (I eat chicken, turkey, and salmon), but I don't call myself vegetarian.

The ones in this forum that say that are only trying to mislead you. They have a dislike for the vegers here.

The word "vegetarian" was created by the vegetarian society. Before they created it in the mid 1800's, there was no such thing as a vegetarian. Certainly people had followed the diet, but it wasn't named as such until the vegetarian society did so. As creator of the word, they are the only one's allowed to define it. Here is the definition of vegetarian:
