I didn't have a cell phone until I was old enough to drive and have a job to pay for it. While cell phones can be convenient, they're certainly not a necessity for children. Kids shouldn't be wandering around stores on their own to where they'd need a cell phone, and they shouldn't be on camping trips without adult supervision. If there IS adult supervision, then the ADULTS will have cell phones to use. Most parents don't have to make important business calls from home (and when they do, it's usually from THEIR cell phones), so something like the situation you presented isn't one that comes into play often enough to justify the purchase. Besides, I also think kids have become far too accustomed to getting what they want when they want it. They're ungrateful as a result and lack basic patience.

They are kids and dont need a cell phone. I didn't get a cell phone until I bought my own and was able to pay the bill. I just think that cell phone for kids has gotten out of hand. Who do they need to call on the cell phone? They should be with their parents or at a house with a phone

There are few reasons on why parents don't let their kids to have a phone. It depend how parent look at it. The most common one is the phone that kids demand is very expensive, with the latest state-of-the art technology nowadays, the phone is getting very expensive and the kids might call their parents to change a new one the moment they see a newer phone in the market. The next reason is the kids might involve in those puppy love and as a result they slack in their studies. It has become one of the major problem in some countries, the teenagers are getting obsess with the phone and forget the real traditional way to greet people especially old people. Languages might extinct too as sms language has become the main language in cellular phone.

Because they're potentially dangerous for children, until their skulls have stopped growing and have become thicker. About 14 or 15 is the earliest a child should use a cell phone regularly.

Children don't need them, anyway. If they're at home they can use the ordinary landline, and young children shouldn't be out without a responsible adult, so if they need to call someone they can use the adult's phone (the radiation danger is minimal with the occasional brief use of a cell phone).

Well for one, a parent can no longer monitor who their child is contacting or who is contacting the child.

I do believe kids who are 16 or 17 years old who may be traveling roads by themselves should have one, but kids that are 13 and 14 have no use for one out side of wanting it.

Not to mention the fact that most parents are literally living pay check to pay check and have a hard enough time giving the kids what they need. They don't need the extra expense of a cell phone.

Not to mention the fact that kids can't even keep track of their shoes much less a tiny cell phone.

Those are my reasons for not allowing my 11 year old a cell phone.

hope this helped you out.

Cell phones are expensive, and young kids don't need them. I don't think most kids have a real need for a cell phone until they are old enough to be out on their own without supervision, and then they may need a phone to contact their parents or for an emergency. Until then, a cell phone is just an expensive toy.

Because the bills will be to high. They are not responsible enough. They lose them. They are not allowed in schools. Take your pick all good reason for no cell phones for kids.

Well, as far as I can make out, most parents _do_ get their kids cellphones!

Why don't I (for my eight year old)?

He's a little CHILD. He doesn't need to be worrying about breaking or losing a device intended for adults. He's too young to be in a situation where he would need it. And he certainly doesn't need to be worrying about being mugged for it.

It's also an appalling precedent to set. Many, many families today are in awful debt because the adults feel that they have failed in life if they don't have the latest, most expensive cars, TVs, holidays, brand new kitchen, all bought on credit... This starts as a child, when they HAVE to have the expensive gadgets their friends have - just because their friends have them. Much better for them to learn right away that it's normal, and nothing to be ashamed of, not to have everything that your friends do, and that you should make your own decisions about what you need, not base it on adverts screaming "you must have this!"

Because they don't need them. I told my sons the day they get a drivers license they will get a cell phone. I feel every teen should have one in case of emergency while driving. But I have also told them that if they lose their cell phone privilege they will also lose they driving privileges as you can't go anywhere without your cell. Likewise, if you lose your driving privilege, there is no reason you need your cell. They go hand in hand!!
