I want to move to America, but the whole gun thing frightens me.... I want to know which is the safest place to raise a young family. A location that dosn't get the twisters and has a population of about 50,000 give or take. My husband has dual citizenship. We are Australian... and want a change of culture, even though I am a little scared of the concept, I think It'll be good and provide us with more possibilities ,.,,,etc etc.......

whats the rainfall over there like and do you have an abundance of water, etc... over here in australia in Southern Queensland we have water restrictions that are are veru strict, hence my question with regards to the water issue.
The thing that worries my about america is the break and enters ( although that also happens here, but mainly for money or possessions, not kidnapping so much) I guess I just want to live somewhere that I can feel safe to walk the dog without worrying about a rapest lurking around the corner etc... ( that happens alot in the town that I live, which accounts for my fear)

Here is a link to the safest and most dangerous cities in America: http://www.morganquitno.com/cit07pop.htm#25
My fiancée is American and from what I have learned over the years I would not recommend any one living in America.
Expect to pay higher taxes!!! This goes against what you hear generally about America but I’ve never seen so many stealth taxes. My Fiancée is a Registered Nurse and earns around $38K a year. Here working wage is taxed 28%, including being taxed for working for a company. I live in the UK and would be earning around $54K and only get taxed 25%.
Do not expect any Employee rights. Most American states have employment at will, which basically means you can be fired for any reason and have no rights. Maternity in the USA is 6 weeks, no pay and your job does not have to be kept. You can be fired for being ill, Lisa’s job has a limit of 4 days sick a year before you are fired.
Expect a lower standard of health care. The hospitals are fine and new with good technology but nurses are required to work with more patients than recommended to, average seems to be 6 a shift. Insurance companies will try and not pay for anything they can, my fiancée was told that she was not covered for blood tests because they were done on the next available day instead of at the doctors office that didn’t offer to do them. Treatment will be turned down by insurance companies, a patient was refused blood pressure medication requested by his doctor because the insurance company said he didn’t need it. And with all this expect to pay a lot more for this.
America is full of very rich and very poor people, it has the highest number of millionaires in developed countries but also the highest amount of people living below the poverty line. America does not help people who need it. The typical attitude seems to be that someone in need of help is there own fault. My fiancée became pregnant and a doctor ordered her to drop from 12 hour shifts to 8 hour shifts. Her employer said that they would rather get rid of her so she had to get another doctor to state that she could work the 12 hour shifts. If she was fired she wouldn’t be entitled to any health care. Her OB would have dropped her since she wasn’t covered, her student loans, at 10%, would still need to be paid as of all the rest of her bills. No company would hire her since she was pregnant.
America has the highest rate of gun crime in the world. America also has one of the highest murder rates in developed countries.
America is a nice country to visit but I wouldn’t like to live there for a long time.

Parts of America are not the idyllic scenes you see from 1950's movies, that's true....but much of it still has wholesome values and beautiful scenery. I'm from a small town in IN and could walk anywhere without fear at 2 in the morning, the other small town in IN I moved to as an adult is the same way.

You will need a gun here.
If Amnesty is passed 100,000,000 more illegal immigrants will be pouring into this country. All will be poor in need of welfare, government health care, etc.
There is not enough jobs for all these people and the crime rate will soar. Gun protection will be necessary!
Taxes will soar even higher to give freebies to illegals.
And you will have to speak Spanish to get a job.
America's future looks very bleak!

What frightens you about the "gun thing?" I assume you are a "law abiding citizen" If that is true your chances of being shot by a gun is small. In contrast your chances of being a victim of assault, burglary, robbery etc. are much lower here in the US compared to places that ban guns such as Australia.
Relax

Sorry - guns are necessary to protect yourself from criminals. I think a war or depression here is imminent - but necessary to take our country back from the global greed monsters. I have seen this country go from best to worst in my lifetime.

I don't live in America (I live in Israel), but I do have an American citizenship since my family used to live there.
I don't think you should be scared, it's not like in the movies. In real life it seems to me like all is normal, and there is no where in the world which is especially safer.
