The typical exfoliator contains abrasive materials to help scrub away the outer-most layers of the stratus corneum, as well as pore opening and softening agents to help dislodge black-heads and their precursors. It is use-full to use an exfoliator and follow up with some toner to close up the pores again (witch hazel works too I hear), and then a good facial lotion to replace lost oils.
Necessary? No, but it sure makes you feel better and almost guarantees you won't get pimples or black-heads.
Brand? I'm a big fan of Neutrogena (dermatologist recommended).

Its not necessary due to the face being probably the most sensitive part of the body. The skin on your face is not as tough. You can get face wipes with exfoliate on. You just put them under water and they foam up. I can not think for the world of me what there called. I think they might be oil of ulay.
You should read all packets though before you put anything on your face.
Good luck with finding this.

I don't think its necessary for most skin types but an easy an gentle way to do it if you want to is wet a small face cloth and gently rub your face with it moving it around in small circles.
For me that works just as well if not better than using an exfoliating product and obviously it is dirt cheap :)

It is only necessary if you have acne-prone, aging or really dark skin, because acne is caused by blocked pores and needs an exfoliator to unblock it. An exfoliator also smoothes wrinkles, fine lines and reveals the layer of younger skin cells beneath the older layer skin cells by exfoliating of the dead or older skin cells. The exfoliating process also helps the skin to glow by removing the dull older skin cells. I would recommend Neutrogena Advanced Solution Pore Refining Peel, because it not only exfoliates the skin, but it also helps to refines the pores. It is also allergy and dermatologically tested, so it is proven to be safe for sensitive skin.

It is not necessary to use such products. Ordinary soap and water are best.
