It depends on the State, in California you can. See 1203.4 Penal Code. If the charge could have been filed as either a felony of misdemeanor, then you can also ask for a 17b Penal Code reduction. This assumes you are off probation and not on probation for something else.

You will need an attorney to do this... he will contact the DA in the area you were convicted and request and expungement...
