Because I am Catholic, I want to start reading the bible and start understanding the history.

But I am so utterly confused as to what I should purchase. After running a couple of google searches, I realized that there are so many different kinds, that I couldn't just take one and read.

Sheesh, talk about confusing!

So my question is...why so many bibles, under one single denomination, and why not just one?

And...

Which one am I suppose to get? Or should get?

The following Bible translations are approved by the Catholic Chruch for personal use:
+ Douai-Rheims http://www.drbo.org/
+ Confraternity Edition
+ Revised Standard Version (RSV) - Catholic Edition
+ New American Bible (NAB) http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/bible/
+ Jerusalem Bible
+ New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)- Catholic Edition
+ New Jerusalem Bible (NJB) http://www.catholic.org/bible/
+ Today's English Version - Catholic Edition

I recommend the New American Bible (NAB) which is the version used during Mass and other liturgies in the U.S. and many other English speaking countries.

Here is a NAB website: http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/bible/

Parts of the bible were written in different languages. King James translated it to English, many feel the King James version is the 'standard', but, because he wrote it several hundred years ago people updated it [ modernized it ]. I would plump for any New English Bible [ easier to understand ] or possibly an 'amplified Bible' where theologians have notes written in to explain obscure bits. Don't get too hung-up over which version, just get a couple from local library, see which you're comfortable with.

There are about 5 stories in the Catholic Bible, in the Old Testament, called the Apocrophia, (sp?) that are only in the Catholic bible. A couple of them are pretty good, one about Daniel, a couple of others, that are not included in the Protestant Bibles. They are not of great consequence, in my Protestant opinion, they do not provide any division between Catholics and Protestants. Other things do that, and it's too bad...it is called, I believe, the New American Bible...

You think you are confused now just wait, it only gets worse from here. the bible is why christianity is such a confusing mess. Listen to Jesus only and seek to understand what He said. Do not bother with others opinions about what Jesus said. When The Holy Spirit gives you understanding of what Jesus said , you will realize just how corrupt and distracting the bible is.

if you want to read the new testament, learn koine greek and read the new testament.

or if you prefer, first read it in translation (while learning koine greek).

but if you are serious about your faith you will learn koine greek. after all, this is the most important book ever written.

if you want to read the old testament, the same advice but with hebrew. but it is the new testament which is the gospel.

never accept advice from any 'christian' who is unable to read the gospel (at least) in koine greek. they are not serious in their faith.

this is very easy, bible is not true, anyone can change in it what he think is appropriate so after years there are hundreds of different bibles, try to read about holly quran it is only one, and doesn't different much. ask about Islam you will like it, just try, and take care.
