FYI: will be hunting in Deep South Texas (lots of brush and mesquite). Do not plan on any shots over 200 yds.

There are a lot of different "AR-15" rifles, and with the .223 barrel lengths range from 16.5 to 23 inches. You bet there will be performance differences.

The Bolt gun is going to have a slight edge in accuracy over a *good* AR, but a *good* AR is going to cost twice as much.

The Savage will have a slight edge--at the same barrel length--as the AR.

The AR will be more flexible, you can use it for everything from varmit shooting to self defense (if you get a shorter barrel.

If price isn't a factor, get a good AR *and* the Savage. Heck, you're in Texas you're supposed to have a dozen guns.

Oh, I just noticed you said you'd be hunting in Texas. The .223 isn't much of a hunting round, unless you're after varmints.

Savage Ar 15

Well even though the AR-15 looks cool and has attachments just remember you are going to have that large price tag to go along with it. Military grade AR like Colt or S&W you are looking at $1500.00 maybe more. Bushmaster more like $800 - $1100.

For what you need it to do I would highly suggest buying the Savage. The prices is lower and Savage does make a decent gun. Even though you can hunt with AR-15s most people I know use them for target shooting and self defense. Don't get me wrong if I had the money and the choice I would pick the AR-15 but the Savage is more of a deal price wise.

There is a few junk AR manufacturers out there. Just watch out for Olympic Arms the most. Their firearms are absolute garbage. $800 - $1000ish range go with Bushmaster. $1200 - $1600ish range go with Colt.

Good luck

Sounds like you are concerned about being left out in the cold when another assault rifle ban happens. The smart thing to do is simply buy a few AR-15 lowers. You can get a Superior Arms for $95 or dump $140 for a name brand Rock River. They take up no room at all, and, later on you - or your grand kids - can build what ever type of AR-15 you want. Back in the early 1980's a full auto M-16 lower would have cost you $300 plus the $200 tax. Now you can't touch one for under $14,000. According to Forbes magazine - investing in a full auto lower is the #1 investement of the last 25 yeras. Who knew?

I am going to say go with the AR.

As far as accuracy, that is up to the person squeezing the trigger, and an AR can be just as accurate as that savage you are talking about, a lot of AR manufacturers have gauranteed MOA for them.

If you are hunting in brush and will need quick follow up shots then really go with the AR, bolt actions arent necessarily meant as brush guns, due to the time it takes to cycle a new round.

The AR is a battle rifle, designed for war, it is meant to take a beating and be reliable, so it is plenty durable for what you want to do.

Look into bushmaster, rock river arms, and dpms for a good quality accurate AR, they will not lose value, and depending on the upcoming election, the chance of another ban may send your AR's value up

I am taking it for granted that the savage is a bolt action, since I havn't heard of a semi. savage223.The bolt locks up basicly absolute making it more accurate,as is the case permently reguardless of caliber.(semi. verses bolt)same caliber comparisons.How-ever the ar is used up to 300 meters at a silouet by the us army. The bullet won't make it that far in a line.I know personally.(bolt=cheap.AR=bad high) good choice either way.Bolt silghtly better.I'm not impresd with AR prob.due to qual.with it in the freezing sleet U.S.ARMY

The Ruger Mini-14 with synthetic stock and stainless steel would be ideal for your putpose. Price is about $600.I am not a fan of the M-16/AR-15 rifles.

The best choice for the purpose you want it for is a Savage bolt action in 22-250 caliber.*

Go with the Savage by all means; it is more accurate and reliable; and will hold its value.
