What precisely is the use for a heaven or hell (and quoting scriptures is not an answer)?

Why does the barbaric idea still exist that anyone who hasn't caused any harm should be "punished" for not believing something that has no evidence?

Simply put, control by fear. Fear will make a person believe and do anything. here's a contradiction for you. one part of the bible says to fear god. Another part says that perfect love casts out all fear. and, we wonder why the christians are so divided and confused.

The precise use of heaven and hell can be explained by the presice use of 'hope' and 'justice', basically. We want to hope that our loved ones who have passed away are in eternal bliss, someplace better than here, and in the loving arms of their creator. Remember the movie GHOST? Weren't we all relieved when Sam finally went up to heaven and his killers were brought to justice? The aetheistic ending would have been three identical graves, for Sam, Willy and Karl, with tombstones bearing a red star!!! Of course the concept of heaven, and entrance to it, is somewhat different among religions. In the muslim faith, you can even hope for better sex in heaven, with virgins or houris waiting to copulate with every good muslim male. However, if you make the fatal mistake of eating pork at your last supper, or even petting a pig like Wilbur, you are doomed to a hot hell, full of physical punishment. Ehem, what was your question again?

Heaven is the presence of God.

Hell is the absence of God. It is a place of torment created to punish Satan. Unfortunately some will make the choice to spend eternity away from the presence of God and thus, spend it in Hell.

It has it's place in making the RELIGOUS lazy leaders of religions RICH. Financially, they are the "geniuses" of our world who have found a way to get even those who barely get by "give" their last few dollars to them while they enjoy lifestyles you and I have to bust our butts to EARN in hard labor. It's probablly why the government is beginning to crack down on these kind, who evade paying taxes like the rest of us.

If you remember these "geniuses" evenually pay a price for their laziness. PRISON. All you have to do is read your bible to see even Paul (founder of the christian churches of old) was thrown in prison or jail time and time again.

These concepts are merely tools that are used by control and power freaks to manipulate the sheeple gullible enough to believe in them. It seems to work quite nicely which is blatant testimony as to just how insecure, insincere, ignorant, and pathetically frightened of the unknown some people can be. It is also blatant testimony as to how those people intelligent enough to know better will take advantage of these common human frailties and use these sheeple as means to their own selfish ends, which is lust for power and need for greed.
