everyone has their favourite tricks and tips and sure fired success methods.
Here are mine:
I knock on it and it should sound like you are knocking on a wooden door
The yellow part is the part where the sun didn't reach while it was lying on the ground. If it is a distinct even colour it is better. Every time the melon is movedwhile growing it has to use up some of it's sugars to re-establish itself. This takes away the sweetness you would taste. A small and blotchy yellow bit is evidence of movement
Once in a supermarket i asked a woman who answered that the end that the stem is not attached to should "look like a woman"
I'll leave you to figure out what she meant!!!
At any rate I check that that end in not soft
Happy eating!!

You check the underpart of the melon and find the lighter spot where the melon was resting on the ground. and the more yellow it is... the more ripe! thumping doesnt work

"See, hear, and sense Your thank you to Ripe Watermelons seem for: the backside of the fruit the place it rests on the floor will turn a golden, straw-yellow colour as a results of fact the melon matures. for yet another seen sign of a ripening watermelon stumble on the curly tendril related to the vine that's closest to the fruit. as a results of fact the watermelon matures and ripens this tendril will dry out and alter into brittle. hear for: The “thump attempt” the key's that thumping a ripe watermelon will produce a touch hollow sound that’s confusing to describe yet as quickly as you get the feel for it figuring out on ripe watermelons will substitute into extra habitual than a count of luck. The hollow sound is additionally felt with your fingertips, fantastically much as though the fruit contained jello in its center. sense for: in basic terms run your palms around the middle of the watermelon, not lengthwise yet around the middle of the fruit between the stem end and the blossom end of the melon. An immature watermelon would be tender to touch, yet as a results of fact the end result mature they are going to advance reasonable ridges which would be very noticeable as you run your palms around the rind." .

Thumping works for me. I always get a good one. Hasn't failed me yet. And I've bought a lot of watermelons thru the years. Depends on your talents. It's not only the sound but the feel of the thump.
