I remember my son trying to crawl out of his at 11 months so in a big boy bed he went. :)

I took mine out of the crib when they started climbing out because I didn't want them to hurt themselves. However, these days you can buy "lids" that are basically netting that you zip over the top of the crib, to prevent baby from climbing out.

Because mine started climbing out so early (under a year of age) and I had twins -- I put them on twin bed mattresses on the floor for several months. Then we had a trundle bed -- so if they rolled out of bed it wasn't far to go. And then they graduated to regular beds by the time they were 2.

I think since they had a graduated approach to the beds, they have never fallen out. I didn't see the sense in buying toddler beds that we would only need for a short amount of time.
