Windows 98 doesn't need nearly as much computer to run as Windows XP does (as you've just found out) ... depending on the processor speed of your Computer you may have to also upgrade your Ram along with your hard-drive to install XP ... I would think you'd need to spend another $100 or so to bring it up to being able to load XP ... download a program called Belarc ... that will tell you the entire specs of your current computer ... for XP you'll need a minimum of 256mb Ram ... 10GB hard-drive ... and a 500MHz processor ... it will run on less but not well ... Good Luck

is hard to diagnosed your problems online~ so if you could give some more details that would be useful.
from what it looks like ur video card might be failling or your memory. It also looks like u had some type of virus that deleted important files in your computer.
i would suggest you backing up in a flash drive, only the most essential files. and format the computer.
i believe calling a technician will charge you around 100$.
so i would suggest you send it to someone that has a fair amt of knowledge about computers and let him fix it~.
u wouldbasically need to format and install xp. if the problems still are there.. u might consider buying a new computer or trying to trounbleshoot what is trhe problem.

Try removing windows 98 from ur system completely and then install windows XP. It should work. Usually windows xp requires 3-5GB of space to install it. Make sure u have RAM memory to run XP..256MB should do fine. Processor speed if more than 550 Mhz then it'll run but ur overall system performance will slow down.

Processors below 700 mhz and ram below 64 mb were fine with Win 98. If you try to install WinXP on it all sorts of error messages come.
If your default monitor is installed and the color and graphics are not good, try installing the monitor/VGA drivers from the manufacturers website. These are free.
But adding more ram should solve your problems.

Yea, you're able to reformat the stressful force and lose each and every thing. relatively you would be commencing from scratch and could reload each and every thing. you're able to be attentive to dos instructions for reformat. i won't be able to undergo in ideas all of them suitable now. you're able to correctly be extra effective off searching for sparkling drivers for the sound card and USB help as a replace. I on no account enjoyed XP until the previous few months while they ultimately have been given it stabilized, continuously ran Win2000. check out the sound blaster internet site for drivers, this is a notably previous card. i don't be attentive to what you have interior the USB yet verify that organisation's internet site too. different than ram, you mustn't have a concern alongside with your cutting-edge setup with XP, it would stumble on something you upload and seek for setup information. of course, it fairly is going to truly be sluggish. each and every version of Windoze takes extra memory and provides extra procedures which slows it down.
