If it's his first gun I would NOT get him an adjustable scope {to many distractions} and Tasco / Bushnell / BSA make inexpensive scopes that work just fine. Personally I got a 4x32 Tasco many years ago for my first new .22 {Coast to Coast model 42 made by Marlin} and having went through shooting many tens of thousands of praire dogs it was used to teach several dozen nieces & nephews to shoot. It still works as good as new even if it doesn't look as good but it sits in the rack waiting for yoeman duty as a trainer. About $40.00 at Walmart and some even come with scope mounts on the scope. Let him get a bigger and fancier scope after he learns the gun.

Check out the Burris line of scopes. Their 3X9 by 40mm is no longer made in the US but it's still a fine scope. I'm sure price is probably an issue as it always is this time of year so you could go with a Bushnell 4X32 from Walmart - reasonably priced for reasonable quality. Whatever you do, stay away from Simmons. These in my opinion are the worst scopes on the market. I had 2, the scond one I took off my rifle and smashed it on a rock. I still have one in a drawer somewhere.

Bushnell makes really good scopes, and you can buy some of their lower priced models at Wal Mart. Be aware that the Wal Mart scopes are not anywhere near the best that Bushnell makes, but they are still good. Get some Weaver rings and bases and you will have a pretty decent setup for not too much.

That's a tube loading .22 isn't it? If so I highly recommend the Mueller APV. It's about $115.00 shipped and for the price you can't beat the features, 4.5-14 maginification and a very wide angle field of view and can adjust down to 10 yards. It has a lifetime warranty, great features and is very affordable. I got one to put one on my nephews 10/22 and liked it so much I got one for my Savage .17 hmr. Avoid the Tascos and other cheapies, I've had bad luck with them in the past, although some people are pleased with them.

All scopes are good, it just depends on how much you want to spend for one.* Walmart has great reasonably priced scopes at various price ranges.*
