If you aren't sure, have the vet check him over for fleas. They're the most familiar with the signs, and can tell you if that's not really what the problem is.
If he's reacted to a flea collar before, I would ONLY use Frontline or Revolution. The drops you get at Petco or the grocery store are crap, and are basically a flea collar in liquid form. Very dangerous, especially if he's reacted before. Ditto for flea shampoos-same insecticide as what's in a flea collar. Hartz and Sargent's should be put out of business. Put some of the dirt on a wet paper towel, if the dirt bleeds red into the towel then it is indeed flea poop. It can be hard to catch fleas if there's only a few, especially if there's that much fur. A vet or professional exterminator can recommend a cat-safe flea spray for the house, you have to treat the house too. The eggs and larvae live down in your carpet pad, and will reinfest your cat when they mature if you don't treat the house. I'd stay away from grocery store flea bombs, get the product from a pro.
GARLIC IS TOXIC TO CATS! It can cause a red blood cell deformity that makes the cells unable to carry oxygen. And it does NOT kill fleas.

What flea treatment is on him, exactly? If it was something you bought from a pet store, I can guarantee it won't work. Of course the people in the store said it was a good brand, they're not going to tell you their own stuff doesn't work, are they? But it doesn't - pet stores aren't licensed to sell the appropriate stuff. What was it, Hartz, Zodiac, Adams, or something else?
Flea collars also don't work and can cause reactions, as you now know. Flea combs are for diagnosing the presence of fleas and for combing flea dirts out, not for getting rid of flea infestations.
You're going to have to splash out on a proper flea treatment like Frontline, Revlolution or Advocate if you actually want to get rid of these fleas. Veterinary treatments are more expensive because they actually work - go and get some, don't waste any more money on useless stuff.

You have to treat the house at the same time as you treat the cat. Flea larvae will lurk in the dark spaces under your furniture and skirting boards.
The best bet is to see the vet and get some Frontline ( or Advantage) and get a household spray while you are there. Not cheap but it is effective ( and buying junk that doesn't work will tend to be more expensive in the long run)
As for the flea dirt, well once you have treated everything it will stop coming back. Just comb it out.
Also treat him for worms as they are carried by the fleas and passed on to the cats.

One of my 3 indoor cats escaped, he came back but brough about a thousand of 'little friends' with him and I had the worst flea infestation on my hands all 3 of my cats. I got Revolution from the vet, it's expensive but it worked really great. Now I just need to give them another dose next month. It's worth it to invest in a good medicine, Revolution not only kills fleas and ticks but also prevents heartworm. And by the way, those specks that you are getting on a flea comb are not flea poop but flea EGGS! Hurry up and get some decent medicine, Revolution also stops the eggs from hatching!!!

Sounds nasty. unfavorable cat would desire to be depressing. in case you acquire the flea stuff from the vet did you apart from would get the enjoyed ones scientific care through fact if it quite is that undesirable then you somewhat could have fleas on your carpets and so on and you may desire to handle those besides or they're going to easily save re infesting your cat. Ear mites - ask the vet for some ear mite drops - would desire to sparkling them up in a pair of week.

Buy the frontline flea treatment and also treat the house as if his fleas are that bad then the house may well have them as well, then he will be getting rid of them and picking them up again from the carpet.

The only two that are vet recommended are Frontline and Advantage. I wouldn't ever use anything else on my 2 children...I mean cats (indoor).:)

Use advantix, advantage, or front line. Nothing else works. The flea droppings you are seeing may be flakes of dry skin.
