When Adam and Eve sinned in the garden, the sacrifice of an animal was the first death ever recorded. This death paid the price for Adam and Eve and clothed their nakedness. At this point, God spoke the first Messianic prophecy of One who will come and crush the head of the serpent.
Until the coming of the Levitical Law, those that came to God were justified by faith--such as Abraham. When the Levitical system was put in place, faith was exercised via a "type" or "model" of He who was to come - that is, the Lamb of God. However, this model was only a temporary covering for sin until Yeshua came and took the sins away. Hence the need to repeat it yearly.

When Isaac asked of his father where the lamb was for the sacrifice, Abraham said, "God will provide Himself a Lamb." This was seen when John the Baptist pointed to Jesus and proclaimed "Behold the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world."
If we ask Jesus to be Lord and Savior, we are, in essence, passing our sins onto Him as our personal lamb. Our payment was paid in full on the cross. Which is why Jesus said "Tetelestai" or "paid in full" (commonly translated as "it is finished").

The cross is nothing new. It had been fortold since Genesis. The work that Yeshua did on the cross was the completion of a plan that had already been in place thousands of years before.

All those who trusted in the coming redemption were justified by their faith. Just as we, looking back, will be justified in our faith.

He said that He would preach to them:

28 "Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice
29 and come out—those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned.
( John 5 )

And that's what happened:
52 The tombs broke open and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life.
53 They came out of the tombs, and after Jesus' resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many people.
( Matthew 27 )

I guess according to the Christians this question gets mixed answers.

Some believe the Jews and converts only were saved through observing the Law, until Jesus came and fulfilled the messiahship so everyone could be saved through faith.

Some also believe that those looking forward to the messiah coming and believing in him even before he came received salvation.

Still others believe no one was saved until Jesus came cuz everyone was sinful and came short of God's glory.

It depends on the particular church and sect of Christianity.

(I'm not Christian anymore but I was raised in a diverse Christian background which includes Baptist, Lutheran, and Mormon)

Every year there were animal sacrifices for the sins of the people. The sacrifices did not forgive the sins, but they were released from the sins of the past year. They kept having to offer sacrifices all the time for other things. Read Leviticus. It will get bogged down, but it gives the rules under the Old Law

If people repented and returned to the Torah (Instructions of YHVH) they would remain in the covenant with Him, they would live. It is the same today except The Messiah is our sacrifice through His body and His blood.

Under the Hebrew "Old" covenant:

Ezek 18:9 if he walks in My statutes and My ordinances so as to deal faithfully-- he is righteous and will surely live," declares the Lord GOD.

Ezek 18:21 "But if the wicked man turns from all his sins which he has committed and observes all My statutes and practices justice and righteousness, he shall surely live; he shall not die.
Ezek 18:22 "All his transgressions which he has committed will not be remembered against him; because of his righteousness which he has practiced, he will live.
Ezek 18:23 "Do I have any pleasure in the death of the wicked," declares the Lord GOD, "rather than that he should turn from his ways and live?

Num 14:18 'The LORD is slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, forgiving iniquity and transgression; ...

Psa 32:5 I acknowledged my sin to Thee, And my iniquity I did not hide; I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the LORD"; And Thou didst forgive the guilt of my sin.

Psa 65:3 Iniquities prevail against me; As for our transgressions, Thou dost forgive them.

Psa 85:2 Thou didst forgive the iniquity of Thy people; Thou didst cover all their sin.

Psa 86:5 For Thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive, And abundant in lovingkindness to all who call upon Thee.

The Messiah came to renew the covenant with the children of Israel, which they broke. Also for the gentile who takes hold of the covenant with Israel.

Eph 2:12 remember that you were at that time separate from Christ, excluded from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.

Jer 31:31 "Behold, days are coming," declares the LORD, "when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah,

John 4:22 "You worship that which you do not know; we worship that which we know, for salvation is from the Jews.

Matthew 27: 51-53

"Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and then rocks were split, and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many."

When Jesus died He went to hell, paradise, Abraham's bosom, and preached to those who died before He was born and who died during His lifetime. When He ascended to heaven 40 days after His resurrection He took those He preached to, to heaven with Him

They gave burnt offeringsof an unblemished lamb to signify the death of Christ the "lamb" in innocent blood. This was to take the place of Christ and show that they were living for Christs coming:)

They went to Hell before that. Satan had disabled people from going to Heave. Christ died so that his soul would go down into Hell where he would fight Satan. He freed Adam and Eve, and all the other's who had died before he came into the world. :)

Quite a noble man, i say. I want a boyfriend like him, so brave. :)
