Today I went to the movie theatre, and as I was walking out I saw this army person in her bdu's walking in. Yes she was going to see a movie, as you can not get into the theatre without buying a ticket first on the outside. But me being prior airforce, I always was told that you are only supposed to wear your uniform for quick stops, such as get gas or buying groceries not for leasure activites. So is it allowed or not?

Army dogs are allowed but US Marines are taught to know better. Cammies are your work uniform not a casual "outfit" to be seen it. It makes me sick to see cammies in public places such as bars and stores.

In the Army it is allowed.

Perhaps she was on her way home from work, or on her way to work, and was trying to fit the movie into her day. We don't always have a lot of time off and getting time to see a movie with one's spouse, or kids can be diificult.

As long as she wasn't at a bar, she can wear her BDU/ACUs off post.

The Army is fighting a war, and dependig on what her particular job is, she may be putting in some long hours, or odd hours. Her unit may be getting ready for deployment, or she may be working hard supporting those in theater from where she is stationed (but working on "Iraq Time" which means her unit ismost active during our night).

Coming from someone in the military, you aren't supposed to. You are only supposed to wear them outside of work for a quick stop, like to get gas or a convenient store, or if you are going out to eat with other military members. People still do it, like you said, but you always here that its not allowed. I am in the Air Force too, and they keep on making it more strict where you can where them, but people still ignore it.

Keep in mind she may have been on duty and put on standby. Decided to go to a movie instead of sitting at home doing nothing. Alert Air Crews used to go to the theater on base all the time in uniform to kill time till they got alerted or not. As long as she was not doing anything to disgrace the uniform, or pose as a representative of the military at a political function or anything of the like kind, she is not violating any kind of rule.

The Army must be different than the AF in this respect. I, like you, have been taught that we are not to wear bdu's "out on the town". I'm stationed next to Ft. Bragg, and I've seen soldiers in the mall, at restaurants, and at the movies wearing their acu's. Different branch different rules.

When I was active duty USMC, we had strict orders that we were to never wear utilities in public. We were not even supposed to make quick stops in them. I don't think it's like that for all the branches, because I always see Army personnel out in public in them.

There isnt a regulation on it, but local base policy by the base commander directs that. If the base commander says its okay, then its okay.

They may also be National Guard or Reserve, they have thier own unit rules too.

I suspect that prior to the war--that was true, as in Canada--all were told not to either.

However since the last so many yrs, that (I've noticed) has changed.

In my experience, no. As you said, quick stops are fine, hanging out at the mall is not.
