Punitive damages are damages in addition to the actual cash value of medical bills, loss of wages etc.
The amount of punitive damages is related to the net worth of the individual and the recklessness of the act.
The reason punitive damages exist is to prevent rich people from hurting others and just paying the bills. Kasey makes millions of dollars a year, if he just has to pay 15k for actual damages for hurting someone he could afford to do that 10 times a year and not be punished since he has the money. If he has to pay say 1 million in punitive damages then that can be a deterrent so it never happens again.
This in no way means Kasey is guilty, hopefully the truth will come out.

The word "Punitive" originated in California around 15 years ago and is gaining popularity. The word actually means " a way to gain money for yourself from someone else " for bullshi* that would have been laughed at prior to 15 years ago.

Punitive damages are damages not awarded in order to compensate the plaintiff, but in order to reform or deter the defendant and similar persons from pursuing a course of action such as that which damaged the plaintiff.
Punitive damages are often awarded where compensatory damages are deemed an inadequate remedy. The court may impose them to prevent under-compensation of plaintiffs, to allow redress for undetectable torts and taking some strain away from the criminal justice system

To me it means the Guards attorney doesn`t have a lot of evidence, and Kahne will settle out of court for half that much
3750.00 each
BUT if it goes to court anything can happen
we all saw what happened to OJ.
