Can't you make up your mind which religion you like? I hear the only requirement for being a Uni, is that you have to not know what to believe. Isn't it exausting celebrating EVERy holiday from all world religions?

Just curious :)

sweet pea: Did you mean me when you said spewing hate? Actually, Unitarians celebrate Chaunaka, ramadan, and many other holidays. Instead of being literal with bible interpretation, and using "God" as the purpose of lectures during holidays, they actually take it as philosophy, pick at it, and intrepret in different ways. uni's can be atheists, but can't be any one religion. I was looking into unitarianism, and meant no offense by the question. It didn't seem anyone else took it in a bad way. I was kinda saying it in a joking way. Anyway, unitarians have nothing to do with Pagans. Actually, I do celebrate all the American holidays, but never do I attend lectures on them as unitarians do. Maybe I should try one out someday. Could be interesting.

I went to a Unitarian church for a while and still do occasionally. The sermon was like a well prepared college lecture and the music was by superb musicians. After a few times attending, I was told that I WAS a Unitarian. I discovered that one of their beliefs was that since humans had brains they should sort out what they believe for themselves and it seems to me that they do a remarkably good job of that. Almost universally the Uni's believe tolerance is highly important. They almost demand respect for all religions and beliefs. The most striking thing about them is that they are really obsessed with social justice and putting their beliefs in doing good works into action. I got involved with the Uni's because they sponsored a Multi-faith Habitat for Humanity build every spring and I can take my registered-sex-offender foster sons to help with the build so they can contribute to a worthy social effort and restore some of the damage they have done. It's amazing how warmly these guys are received by the Uni's.
Oh, and YES they do like to celebrate a lot.

From what I am understanding, Unitarianism is much like Paganism. I personally celebrate thee same religious holidays I have celebrated since birth: New Years, Christmas, Halloween, Easter, St. Patty's, 4th of July, Thanksgiving, etc. Each of these holidays holds some type of religious value to a culture. So, if you celebrate these major holidays, haven't you already been celebrating holidays from different world religions? Do you get tired from the celebrating every year. You have made a very specific "accusation" to a very broad group of people. I would gladly celebrate any religious holiday at least once with people of that belief, just so I can have a better understanding of what they believe and why they believe it. If more people would be willing to listen to the ideas, beliefs and experiences of other faiths/cultures instead of vomiting forth hatred, we would be a TRUE melting pot of people who have truly learned to live in peace.

Unitarian Universalism has no dogma outside of being a welcoming congregation. I've attended services led by an atheist Lay Leader.

Unitarian Universalism isn't a religion so much as a ideology. It says bring whatever you like from whatever doctrine you find attractive, so you can share and exchange common ideas with others. It's a heck of a lot more mature than most religions.

UNI is a safe haven for folks that have been spit on by the *NORMAL*, big three, religions. They take all the good folk that have had their eyes opened and saw the mainstream as the controlling, hateful, guilt laiden force that it is.
