I had foot surgery this morning and my doctor prescribed me with 10 tylenol #3 pills. I am in severe pain and these will only last into mid afternoon tomorrow. How do i ask him for more, i don't want to sound addicted or desperate. Also, i think i need something stronger, these barely take off the edge, how do i ask that.

Unless you have a habit of requestiung narcotics prior to the surgery, your surgeon will not think you are addicted. It is common to give small amount of an analgesic medication after a surgical procedure. Different patients will have varying responses to the pain stimuli, based on multiple factors. You may need a different medication. It is probably best that you don't have a significant amount of a medication which is ineffective for your discomfort.

Call the surgeon's office in the morning. Explain that you have been taking the medication as prescribed, and that it is ineffective, and you havew also run out of the medication provided. They will give you, most likely, a different medication.

Do not call your family physician, as was suggested by another responder. First, they did not perform the surgery and have no reason documented in their records for providing you with narcotics. Second, your surgeon needs to know what type and level of pain you are experiencing in case there is a problem. Finally, if you contact multiple physicians asking for narcotics, you will probably be seen to be "Dr. Shopping" which is common among people who abuse, misuse or illegally distribute prescription medications.

I'm sorry you are having pain. Follow up with your surgeon.

Call him up and tell him you need something stronger. Some meds don't work for some people the same as they do for others. Just say "Hey man, these pills aren't doing the job and I'm still having some pretty bad pain here...I need you to call in something else." Maybe suggest something else that has worked for you in the past with no side effects. Feel better soon.

Everyone has different pain sensitivity. He gave you an average treatment. It is proper to request more pain meds. The other reason he wants to hear from you is that very abnormal pain may reveal something that requires more care than just pain killers. What if swelling causes your pain and stems from an infection? He wants to hear about that early.

I just ask the Dr. for what I want. He will know that you don't have enough pills. Tylenol#3??? yuk...do they work? I'd ask him for something stronger. He won't think you're addicted ... you just had surgery. You're supposed to be in pain. Take it from me ...he will give you some more pain pills and if you tell him they don't touch the pain much at all...you'll get some good ones. I don't know what you've taken before but I can give you some good hints and suggestions if you'll email me. Thanks

I am so sorry you are in so much pain. Just call his office and ask to talk to the nurse. Tell her exactly what you are saying here. Tell them you need something stronger.
Your other option is to call your family Dr. However, it's safest to have one Dr. doing all the ordering of pain meds. Hope you heal soon.

Take a deep breath and exhale... but instead of just letting air noises out, throw in a few words.
