Since the days of Pearson the Canadian Forces gradually developed an association with "Peace Keeping". We seem to have lost that entirely with recent deployments.
Who thinks that Canada could take the lead and create an "International Rescue" agency and entirely give up the idea of "military".? What a great lead this would be to all other nations. Lets sell those submarines and tanks and develop an effective airlift capacity that can bring help and not arms.

No disresepect to veterans who served their country and cause. I myself am a veteran of the military and served in times of conflict.

I am indeed a veteran. A retired Royal Air Force pilot. I am now however a Social Worker. My point of change was working during the Ethiopian airlift in 85 and working alongside Mother Teresa.

For those writing from a US perspective please reflect on the lies told by Bush that got you into Iraq. Now you have to figure how to get out.

And for those who submit a fear based response...Maybe its time to be brave and actually do something that will impact the world in a positive manner. I truly believe the majority of the Canadian public would support this idea.

The Canadian Military have a great Military Tradition starting in South Africa, pre WW1 and in WW2, Korea, and I see no reason for them to give it up, they are doing well in Afghanistan and I remember meeting Canadians in Damascus, Syria in 1980 as part of U.N.D.O.F.

A International Rescue Agency is already in place its called the RED CROSS and is working well to serve the needs of people in disaster areas.

How do you propose to secure members of the International Rescue" from armed elements in a country devastated by Civil War or natural disaster, when mob looting becomes order of the day??

You cant go arming civilians, that is the responsibility of an organisation called the military.

Canada will always require its military, you sell all your means of defence off and you might as well put up a sign come and take over Canada.

Pay no heed to "Victor Bout" he is obviously a total Moron, The Canadian Military put more time in combat in WW1 and WW2 than the US, some of us remember the 3,000 Canadian Casualties at Dieppe in WW2, the pre-event to D-Day a few Years later.

With all due respect"the majority of the Canadian Public" today cannot decide if they want to be ruled by French speakers or English speakers, Canada could end up in the same pickle as Belgium!!!

Submarines are the only thing I agree with getting rid of because they should have never been bought in the first place. They are pieces of crap that was a total waste of money.

All the rest that is definitely necessary. While it may not seem like it lots of humanitarian effort is being done with the equipment and the personnel in the Canadian military. Plus right now they are already helping the US military by doing extra patrols in Northern Canada and Alaska area because there is problems with the US military aircraft.

I do not believe you are a Veteran. Because as a Veteran you would know that a strong military is vital to the defense of a nation.
