Depending on the type animal a bullet can be lethal from a 30-06 for more than a mile. While it wouldn't bring down a moose or bear at that range it could stop a rabbit or bird if they were struck. It could also kill a human.

Never target practice with any rifle with out a solid bank or stop behind the target. When in the field hunting always watch for other hunters or domestic animals in your line of fire. Give up a shot rather than taking the chance of injuring someone or a farmers animals.

First of all:
It's not "safe to shoot" unless you KNOW
where that bullet will stop.
Those who quote you "effective ranges" are talking about
how far aimed fire might be placed on a target, not
how far the bullet will carry lethal force.
Depending on angle of elevation a 30-06 can carry
for miles.
Always shoot to a backstop.

550-600 yards as proven by WWi and WWii soldiers with Springfield rifles in the 303 cal and the M1 Garand in WWii in 30-06. Will kill anything in the 160-220 lb range and disable anything up to 400 lbs

I have personally seen a shot of three miles. at 1.5 miles a person sighted in and relayed where the target was.
based on the information, corrections were made and a drone camera gave the final sight for the shooter, who actually couldn't see the target, which was a rabbit.

just say 7 miles for anything over centrefire and about 4 miles for a .22. That it is a lot easier to do that than remember anything else. I am assuming you mean what is the maximum the bullet can travel and still kill, and not the range at which the round loses effectiveness.

well a .22 can travel up to 4 miles and still be deadly so i would say 5 - 6 miles for an odd 6

i, have personally seen shots of over 1,700 yards, where the shot was lethal.
to make a shot from that distance, you HAVE to be GOOD.
the average person, to hit a target ( of reasonable size ) at that distance, would have to rely on a LOT of LUCK.
even for a skilled hunter, it is still a very long shot
