I had a dog, Lady, that had a mother who was a purebred black lab and a father who was a mixed breed which had a bit of rottweiler and doberman in it. She was a ver good dog.

It is unfortunate that poor breeding and poor socialization have amounted to a few bad, violent dogs which have tainted the public's view of the breed.

Most of the time an animal that bites someone has a reason. Whether it was trained incorrectly, is rabid, feels threatened (and they will let you know before biting), is starving, sick, or you had hurt it, it was loose (don't let your dogs run loose, fence them in or put them on a leash, make sure they are properly trained), etc. Kids often get bit because the parent is not properly watching them and the kid doesn't realize they are antagonizing the dog.

Dogs like pitbulls, rottweilers, etc. get a bad rap due to BYB's and irresponsible owners.

I love all dogs. Even if I meet a bad example of the breed (which I have) there are always good ones out there. I remember when I was about seven or so, there was a Rottie living just up the road, and my sister and I had to pass it on the way to the park. So there we were, dodging behind trees while the dog lay down near the gate watching us (I'm sure if dogs could laugh he would have been). One day the owners saw us doing that, and asked why. When we explained we were scared of their dog, they laughed and invited us to meet Zach. He was the most placid, loving, gentle dog you could imagine. There are dog breeds that are bad for certain people, in that their lifestyle doesn't suit, but there are no bad dog breeds. Merry Christmas to all dog lovers.

No, just like any breed that has obtained quick popularity, there will always be a core of breeders/fanciers that love the breed and won't 'ruin' it -- bybers have just made a lot of poorly bred ones that have tainted most of JQP's perception of the breed but they didn't think highly of them prior to their popularity so that doesn't matter... same thing has happened with lots of breeds but there are conscientious breeders who will keep good representatives of the breed thriving. People are afraid of mice and their own shadows so who 'people' are afraid of doesn't mean much in the long run. I owned Rotties when there were relatively few (when you could get a major with three dogs in the ring!) and they were great dogs then and are still and will continue to be great dogs, just like all knowledgeably well bred dogs :)

Yes. Some of us still do. I have an 8 y/o male. Even though he's a trained guard dog, he's the biggest baby and is playful. There is alot of bad stigma attached to this breed. Like any breed of dog, if they are raised and trained right, they will not be mean. I also have two male Pomeranians. One of my Poms came home with my son and was obviously mistreated and neglected by the people who owned him before us and he was very mean. It took alot of hard work and alot of attention, but he's a sweetheart, now. Rotties are no different.

I LOVE Rotties! Though APBTs are my absolute favorite breed, my husband and I own three of them, but I also really like the other two "pit bull" breeds, American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, and Rotties and Dobies! It's sad that these breeds are so feared and hated right now. These are some of the most amazing breeds, but just like every breed it is critical that they are properly bred, raised, trained and socialized. It's irresponsible breeders and irresponsible owners that have given these wonderful breeds such a bad rap, and it's so sad! : (

Rotties are great; people love them. My fondest memory of one house we lived in when I was a kid was the Rottwieler next door who loved us kids and gave us big hugs.

My grandpa had a rott before he died. Barren was the smartest dog I had ever seen. When my grandpa would tell the dog he was cold, Barren would go get a blanket off the bed and bring it to him. When he said "Barren, it's cold outside.", he would go shut the door. I'm not sure if I should give the credit to my grandpa or the dog, lol, but I've never seen a dog quite like Barren was. R.I.P. both of them.

yeah thank god theres someone out there that has the same opinion... I like rot's, my friend has a nice lovable one....

I have the best sterotypical killer dog though. I own a pitbull that wouldnt hurt a fly, but every time I take her out to the dog park or on a walk all the ignorant ppl act like she's gonna break loose and go for their juggular.

They are in the top 10 of my favorite breeds. I own a husky/Rottie cross and he's a big sweet lug. :-) All Rottie fans should check out this video as a response to Rottie BSL:
