Yes, I agree that 15 months is way too long..My hubby just returned 2 weeks ago from a 15 mo tour in Iraq. The 18 R&R is just a quick visit that goes by way too fast. There is not enough time at all to reconnect with family.
The worst part about this is his unit is up for another rotation in about a yr and a half. They told them even before they came home!! We now have that hanging over our heads. I think that info could have waited a bit...
It sounds really crazy now but the time will go by fast for the most part...Keep the faith, sometimes that is all we have...You didnt say whether you were a spouse or a family member..Remember that we military families are a strong bunch..not a job for the weak...
Best of luck to you and yours!!

My uncle joined the Marine Corp Infantry in January of 1941. meaning he had 11 months in while the Pearl Harbor assault via the eastern befell on December 7, 1941. He have been given lower back from his deployment to the Pacific while the conflict replaced into over. He stayed in and spent 3 years in Korea battling the Korean conflict. this is the way it used to artwork, you went to conflict until it replaced into over or you have been wounded heavily or killed. I did a 14 month deployment in Afghanistan and regular Asia. Few human beings prefer to flow to a third or 4th international s___hole to get shot at. i replaced into happy they did no longer do issues the previous style way, i might nonetheless be there and so might you. as quickly as you have raised your suitable hand and sworn the oath, you have given the armed forces the splendid to settle directly to deliver you to conflict and save you there as long as mandatory. It sucks, yet for this reason they call it conflict and not "Sandal's hotel". The conflict interfered with my retirement plans. This previous guy went, did his accountability to the final of his ability, and got here lower back. to make advantageous i did no longer redeploy, I retired. this is a sparkling shrink project, in case you prefer to stay in, provide up complaining, you would be used to fulfill the purposes of the provider, anyplace, each and every time and for whether long they want you. in case you sense that it fairly is too plenty, your purely decision is get out.

I did four deployments. Each lasted a year. My favorite commentary on this was said by an unnamed Marine at an Enlisted club in Okinawa in the mid-1960s. The leader of the band that was entertaining at the club asked the Marine how long he had left on his tour. His reply was "One day, a wake-up and a half a cup of coffee". The band leader wrote a jazz number by that name and it became an instant hit everywhere the band played on the island.

15 months away AND directly involved in combat ops is TOO long for any human to return and be "normal". I highly respect my brothers and sisters in arms. I think they are gone for far too long and it is mainly because the military shrunk in the 1990's. If we had more combat brigades this would have not been an issue. I wonder who got rid of some of those brigades to "save money"?

I'm just here for nine months this time, so no R&R for me this time, just a week of training in Kuwait in a couple months. My next tour in 09 will be for the full 12-15.
Keep your head down and your chin up. This time of the year is the hardest for all of us.

Well judging by how the Americans have tortured the Iraqi people over the past 4 years I am more inclined to have concerns about their safety under your occupation than your inconvenient workload.
