I was putting coins in a parking meter… when I noticed that the car next to mine had expired…and the meter officer was in the process of giving a ticket to another car 2 cars away…with what change I had left in my hand …I put in the meter next to mine that had expired…about 50 cent….the meter officer tells me that I cant do that…and I can get a ticket for doing it…but she would let it go this time….I asked her why would I get a ticket …she say’s because that’s not your car…and its against the law…I still don’t see what harm I did…

There was a scam where homeless people would watch for police and then feed the meters when they came. If the police didn't come, the homeless people made the money and not the meter, so they made it illegal.

Here's an example-

For the most part, it seems like the United States, and other areas in the world is becoming so anti-GoodNatured, that it is becomming difficult to be generous anymore.

The bottom line, they want to be able to ticket people for not paying the meters.

The reason most city municipalities meter parking is because they have limited parking spaces, and they want to make money off of those parking spaces. It's unfortunate, but most cities are out to make money.

The law preventing you from paying another person's meter was designed to prevent people from being good natured in that regard; and it also allows them a higher return. A single ticket is worth well more than a day or more worth of parking meter rates.

Wow that is sad that your good deed could result in a ticket to you. I would hope all officers would let someone go on first offense just because most (if not all) people don't know that. I know that ignorance of the law is no excuse but that is ridiculous that you cannot feed someones meter out of kindness. Well you keep being a good person and "don't let the _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ get you down."

I'm a defense attorney and I can't find that anywhere in the California Vehicle Code. Maybe it is a local ordinance? I will never stop putting money in other people's meters. I think a charge like that (as if anyone in their right mind would ever cite someone for that) would get laughed right out of court.

wow, i do that too. i didn't know that. i would suppose that if you extend someone else's meter then you prevent the parking enforcement officer from issuing that person a ticket.

if you were really breaking the law, then you would have been issued a ticket--that's just what i think. (but since you didn't get one, well that goes to show you how serious breaking that law is...)

In many places it's called 'stuffing the meter' and is prohibited. Supposed to allow others to park there.

Uh-huh.

Right.

what ! i can,t see how they could arrest them for putting money in someone elses meter. all they are doing is helping the person out. they are probably mad because they could,nt write out a ticket. they get payed so much for every ticket they write.

You are right and the officer was wrong. What she told you is something she made up, because you frustrated her desire to write a ticket and fill her quota that much sooner and go to Duncan Donuts. If my neighbor defaults on his property taxes and I step forward and pay his tax bill to the municipality for him, that is perfectly legal, and they cannot take his property away from him. The exact same principle applies to parking meters.

I have never heard of that law.. Even while studying for my drivers ed exam in school. I think the meter maid get a commision for how many tickets she writes cause thats money in the city funds.. If you dis allow them to make money, her salary is at stake... thats my take on it..

Well, that was a very sweet thing you did. The reason she said that is because she wanted to write them a ticket too. The city gets more money that way. Just don't let her see you do that next time. wink*
