There were actually two Boer Wars

- 1st Boer War 1880-1881: A truce / armistice was declared after the British realised that they couldn't win with the number of troops they had.

- 2nd Boer War 1899-1902: It was all but over by 1900, however it turned into a guerrilla war against the commandos which lasted until 1902.

The British won, however at a great cost. It changed the relationship between all colonies and the British. It is considered a major turning point in British colonialisation.

The British won the war. In October of 1899 the Boers, starting the war with the maxim 'the key to a good defense is a good offense', invade Natal and Cape Province and quickly invest three towns: Ladysmith, Mafeking, and Kimberley. This forces the British to abandon their original offensive plans in order to lift the sieges. The subsequent set-piece battles to free these cities only highlight the problems of the British Army. It is after achieving overwhelming superiority in the field that the British manage to lift the sieges and capture the capital cities of the two Boer republics in May/June, 1900.

Many of the Boers after the British Victory joined the South African Army and served under the British in World War 1.
