The religions who say that the end of the world is in 2012 are not to be taken literally in the same way that most religious texts speak metaphorically. 2012 is not the end of the world, it's a shift from one age of the earth to another. There's some kind of astrological alignment going on too. It's not clear what type of change will take place.
Life is short and you should live it to the fullest, but people have been saying the world is about to end for millions of years. If they would have said..who cares it's all going to end, then we wouldn't be where we are today. Our forefathers founded systems and tried to make the world a better place for their children and plan for the future in spite of doomsdayers. It's in human nature to try to improve the state of things.

Armageddon MAY happen then...It IS very close.
But the world will not end.
It has to be here to house the righteous.
(ISAIAH 45:18) For this is what Jehovah has said, the Creator of the heavens, He the [true] God, the Former of the earth and the Maker of it, He the One who firmly established it, who did not create it simply for nothing, who formed it even to be inhabited: “I am Jehovah, and there is no one else.
(PSALM 72:16) There will come to be plenty of grain on the earth; On the top of the mountains there will be an overflow. His fruit will be as in Leb′a·non, And those who are from the city will blossom like the vegetation of the earth.
This has to be future.

I think its because a minority believe that they can predict the date. Most people figure they will see 2013 and don't want to live in a hot, flooded world.
