A pug is a great first dog and would fit all of the above. Also maybe look at some Terriers they are all of the above, the only thing if them is they can become very protective so socialization is important when young.

Any dog with a great attitude! I used to have GSDs, and considered myself a 'big dog' person - I now have Lancashire Heelers (only 10-12" at shoulder) and have had to admit that character and attitude is not related to size - these little guys are just the business.

i agree with the corgi but does shed two times a year - some more than others - there are certain diets that control the dog's shedding - my friend's corgis shed like crazy - my corgis hardly shed. They are hot and cold air tolerant - playful alert, friendly, cute little legs. Most smaller dogs, like the chihuahua and yorkie have a serious issue with the cold - they cannot regulate their body heat as well as bigger dogs.

I am a dog walker and I have walked a lot of dogs and have spoken to their owners... Corgi's shed a lot! I know because my clients complain about it a lot. You could do well with a Peekapoo or a Havanese. They are two dogs that are uber cute and do not shed. They are also very sweet and not as vocal. They are smart and do not usually get chubby easily. You can pick them up relatively easily. Corgis can get rather heavy. The Corgi I walk is 35lbs!

you have to fit the dog to your lifestyle, do you live in an apt, or do you have a home, does either one have a good yard and is it fenced????DO I HAVE THE MONEY, and time to care for a dog, they can be expensive, meds, vitamins, vet bills...if you are willing to take on the responsiblity to care for a life here are some top breeds for you....and good luck..

Miniature Schnauzer, does not shed, has fur, but has to be groomed, great house pets, companions and great little guard dogs, loves their humans.

Golden Retrieve, loyal, loves to run and play, loves attention, good protector without being mean.

Akita, this one takes some real training, good guard dog, loyal loving companion dog........

Chihuahuas are a really great dog, they dont do good in cold weather though.
But they are the sweetest kind of dog you could ever get.
