Tonight, he started him on Ivomec. I am thinking the dose is too high. I love my vet and he is amazing but the dose seems too much. I know this is not the best place to get answers for that but just wondering if there is a vet tech here or breeder that might know. Theo weighs 5.13 pounds, he is almost 14 weeks old. He is taking 0.13ml (or cc) of Ivomec daily. Is this dose too high with his weight. The research I have done tells me it should be half of that. Does anyone know. And yes I take my pup to the vets all the time, just want some opinions. thanks

That is the recommended daily dosage when treating demodex mange. Demodex requires a much higher dose than other parasites do. Dose is 600mcg/kg. Usually the dose starts out at 1/4 of that and is gradually increased daily until maintenance dosage is reached to make sure the dog is tolerating it well. If not, a lower dose is used for awhile. Other treatment includes weekly dipping with Mitaban for at least 6 dips or more.

Sounds like your vet is knowledgeable.

I would call your vet to double check because that does sound high. The typical concentration of Ivermectin is a 1% solution, maybe the solution they prescribed was more dilute and requires a higher quantity to reach the desired dose.

If it was diluted then that would be why it's so high. When we treat demodex or give the monthly heartworm dosage, it's usually 1cc/10lbs, once a month for heartworm prevention, every 2 days for demodex. so that sounds awful high for a little baby. Of course if it's diluted that would make sense.

I agree 100% with kimbeej. I just finished studying parasites in school. Demodex is very hard to treat. Demodex is a natural parasite, even humans have it (in our eyebrows). It sounds like you have a good relationship with your vet. It is going to be a long road. Good luck!

What breed is he? 0.13 cc isn't that much if your vet diluted it with a vehicle to make overdosage less likely. By diluting a potent medication with saline or sterile water, it can be made safer to administer for tiny doese, like a puppy would need. Don't be afraid to call your vet and ask. We'd like to see more responsible, free-thinking clients like you.

i am not sure of the dosage but make sure it is correct. my dog had mange and they gave him 3 shots of unknown amount and concentration every 2 weeks and now my dog can barely walk, loss of appetite, and swollen lymph nodes. the vet wants me to do a biopsy b/c she thinks he has cancer but i have read other blogs where people's pet died from overdose. when in doubt, ask!

Call the vet back and make sure they didn't make a mistake.

Call the vet back and see if they messed up or change vets.
