i have a kitten that's 2 months old, and he was seperated from his mother very early. He goes into the litter box to poop and when he comes out, he usually scratched the side of the litter box, but never covers it. I have followed him many times to the litter box, but when i do and try to show him how, he just jumps out and runs away. Is there anyway that i can do something to teach him how?

My one cat does this also. I read somewhere that this is atually a sign of dominance in cats. They don't cover it because they want to show their dominance in the house. It's not abnormal at all and you might never actually teach him how.

I had a kitten who did the same thing she would scratch the lip of the rubber box making a lot of noise. She did that her entire life, so that when I heard that sound, I'd go and scoop out the poop. Kept a cleaner box that way.

a lot of cats do that. it's no big deal. my one cat used to spend like 5 mins. trying to cover it up, but he made more of a mess!! my one cat now doesn't even cover it up and he's 7 yrs. old now. your cat is being a typical kitten. they just want to play, not spend time in the litter box. that's no fun!!

Since this is such a young kitten, I wouldn't worry just yet. Some cats never get the hang of burying, though.

Some cats never quite get the hang of that. We've got one (of four) that scratches, but rarely actually buries it. Sometimes one of the other cats will go in there a bury it for him.

LOL i have a blind cat named stevie who scratches on the side. try spraying perfume on the side of the litter box. they most likely won't try scratching on the side after that.

I had a cat that never got the hang of it. He used to scratch up a pile, and THEN poop on top.

Is he declawed?
If so, it may hurt to bury it, but i must say, that procedure is not good. I'm sure you already knew that though. I'm not sure if there really is a way to teach him because they mostly learn how to clean themselves and how to go to the bathroom by their mothers.
